How To Attain PEO Provisional Licence

The PEO provisional licence may be given to an applicant who is applying for a professional engineer (P.Eng.) licence who has fulfilled all of PEO’s licensing requirements besides the minimum of 12 months of verifiable and acceptable engineering experience in a Canadian jurisdiction, under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer in the jurisdiction in which the work was taken up.

To be eligible for a provisional licence, a P.Eng. licence applicant needs to:

·       Fulfill PEO’s academic requirements for licensing;

·       Pass PEO’s National Professional Practice Examination; and

·       Show to PEO’s satisfaction a minimum of 36 months of acceptable and verifiable engineering work experience outside Canada.

Achieving a provisional licence:

If you fulfill the eligibility requirements for this licence and want to get one, it’s a must for you to request it by writing to PEO. Your written request must be with your full name, your PEO file number and your signature.

You bear the responsibility for making sure that PEO has your current experience record on file and your referee response forms. If PEO doesn’t have a current and complete detailed engineering experience record, provide it with one and request a provisional licence.

PEO may need you to attend an Experience Requirements Committee interview before it grants you a provisional licence.

When the authority has approved your application for a provisional licence, it will invoice you for the provisional licence registration fee of $339 ($300.00+ HST).

Professional Engineers Ontario may issue a provisional licence to those ones who have completed all the requirements for licensing as professional engineers apart from the 12-month acceptable engineering experience in a Canadian jurisdiction under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. This licence is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance and may be renewed for an extra 12 months only under special circumstances as determined by the Registrar.

The holder of the provisional licence has the right to practice professional engineering only under the supervision of a professional engineer, and shall not issue a final drawing, plan, specification, report or another document unless the supervising professional engineer also signs and dates it and affixes their seal to it.
