Dental health is important for each and every individual and one need to take care of oral health from childhood. Our eating habits affect our teeth the most and after that no proper care, worse the dental issues. We all know that poor oral health affects our overall health so it’s better to develop oral hygiene habits in children when they are young. Many health issues come with oral health in old age. Senior citizen oral care is very important because a study found that many people are losing their natural teeth from 65-75 years of age. The health of older citizens starts decreasing because they lost their natural teeth and the majority of people are not able to eat with the help of artificial teeth.
Old aged people suffer from many health-related problems and some of them are:
- Respiratory Problems: Pneumonia is a very common health problem in elderly people and one of the common reasons for getting this is poor oral hygiene. When old age people are not able to clean their teeth properly, the infection in gums and teeth starts going inside the body and damages the lungs.
- Dementia: Dementia is also a major health problem in the brain that occurs due to the bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria start killing the cells of the brain and with those changes in the brain and memory starts occurring.
- Diabetes: Diabetes is another health issue that starts with bad oral health. When gums and senior citizen teeth are producing bacteria, it directly affects blood sugar levels. It is very difficult to control blood sugar levels when a person is suffering from mouth-related problems.
Some of the common oral health problems in older people are tooth loss, tooth decay, dryness in the mouth, and darkened teeth. Dentists also take proper care of old people because while treating the old age patient many problems arise like high blood pressure and fluctuations in blood sugar levels. To prevent such problems in older age, one should start focusing on eating habits and proper care of oral health.
