No Hot Water
One of the most common water heater repairs homeowners experience is when the water heater is not producing hot water. The reasons for a lack of hot water can vary depending on your water heater type. If you have a tank-style water heater, the pilot light may have gone out. If the pilot light is not lit, simply relight it according to the manufacturer’s directions. If you have a tankless water heater, the cause of not having hot water could be related to the temperature setting. Be sure to check that the water temperature setting is set to the desired temperature. If your problem still persists, it is possible there is a broken thermostat or a tripped circuit breaker. In this case, it would be best to call a licensed plumber for service.
Water Heater Replacement
In some cases, water heater repairs may not be enough to fix the unit and replacement may be necessary. If your unit is over 8-10 years old, it is more cost effective to replace the entire unit instead of trying to repair it. Additionally, if your unit is severely leaking, replacement may be the best option. When replacing a water heater, be sure to consider the size of the unit, the type of water heater, the fuel source, and efficiency ratings.
Flushing Water Heater Tank
Another common water heater repair is flushing the water tank. If the water has a bad taste, or contains particles and sediment, the water tank should be flushed. Flushing the water tank can help to prevent buildup of sediment that can cause the water heater to become blocked and less efficient. To flush the tank, you will need to turn off the cold water supply to the tank, open the pressure relief valve to drain the tank, turn off the gas or electricity to the tank and allow the tank to cool down. Once cooled, you can use a garden hose to slowly flush the tank until the water runs clear. Once the tank is flushed, the cold water supply should be turned back on, the power reconnected, and the pressure relief valve closed.
Finally, it is important to check for any signs of damage to the water heater tank, pipes, or connections. If any signs of damage are found, it is generally best to contact a licensed plumber as soon as possible. Water heater repairs can be complicated and in some cases can be dangerous. For any repair, it is advised to contact a professional for service.
