The meaning of car insurance

Learn the ins and outs of your auto insurance policy.

Having at least the barest minimum of liability coverage in case of a vehicle accident is required by law in most jurisdictions. Is that sufficient? Which choices do we have? Please find out your auto insurance coverage options and how they operate.

Learn the fundamentals of vehicle insurance.

If your car is damaged in an accident or stolen, your auto insurance policy will help cover the resulting costs. In return for your premium payment, the insurance company will compensate you for covered losses following the terms of your policy.

Automobile insurance protects against the following:

Loss of or harm to property, such as an automobile

To be liable is to be legally responsible to others for injuries or damages you cause to them.

Injuries, rehabilitation, occasionally lost pay, and funeral costs fall under "medical."

In most of the United States, basic vehicle insurance is required by law, while regulations vary. You may choose the auto insurance coverages you need and how much coverage you want at a price that works for you, thanks to "a la carte" pricing.

Typically, policies are provided for either six months or a year and are renewed. The insurance provider will remind you when your policy is up for renewal, and the premium payment is due.

Whom does my car insurance protect, and under what conditions?

If you or a family member are insured drivers, your auto insurance will protect you even if you borrow someone else's vehicle with their consent. You are also covered if an uninsured driver borrows your automobile with your permission.

Only driving for personal reasons, such as getting to and from work, errands, and vacations, is covered by personal vehicle coverage. You will not be covered if you use your vehicle for profit, such as pizza delivery.

If you use your vehicle to provide rides to strangers via a service like Uber or Lyft, you won't be covered by your Auto Insurance policy. However, several car insurance companies now provide optional add-on policies that cover ride-hailing services and their drivers.

Is it required to get car insurance?

Different states have different minimum coverage requirements for cars. Your auto loan provider could have additional guidelines to follow if you need financing. Nearly every US state mandates that drivers have in their vehicles:

Costs related to injuries or fatalities you or another driver inflict while operating a motor vehicle are covered by bodily injury liability coverage.

Paying for repairs to someone else's automobile or other property (such as a fence, building, or utility pole) if you or someone driving your car causes damage to it is known as property damage liability.

Medical payments coverage or personal injury protection (PIP) is another kind of insurance many states mandate drivers to have if they or their passengers sustain injuries on the road. It will pay for medical bills, replacement services, and missed income.

If you are in a collision with a driver who does not have vehicle insurance, or if the other driver flees the scene without providing their information, uninsured motorist coverage will pay for your damages. You may also get "underinsured motorist coverage," which kicks in when the other driver doesn't have enough insurance to cover the damages.

Consider purchasing PIP and uninsured motorist coverage even if doing so is not required in your jurisdiction.
