Tanning beds are used by a lot of individuals who want to keep or get a tan all year round. It is crucial to know how to tan safely and evenly before using a tanning bed for the first time. It's important for first-timers to follow safety measures while tanning to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Before you get your tan, shave and exfoliate.
An uneven tan may be caused by dry, dead skin cells. Make sure your skin is nice and smooth by exfoliating a few days before your first trip to the tanning bed. Those who are trying tanning for the first time should also think about shaving or waxing to get rid of body hair. In the same way that dead skin may prevent the tanning bed's UV rays from reaching your skin, body hair can do the same.
Use Lotion
Get a tan inside by using a specific lotion. In order to keep your skin healthy and extend the life of your tan, the American Tanning Institute recommends using tanning lotion prior to sunbathing in a tanning bed. Tanning salons usually have indoor tanning lotions, which should be applied a few hours before entering the UV tanning bed.
Wear Goggles
Don't forget your goggles. The ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by indoor tanning beds may cause serious damage to your eyes. Do not close your eyes or use regular sunglasses inside a tanning bed; only specially made tanning goggles will provide adequate protection. While most tanning salons will lend you protective eyewear, regular sunbathers may want to purchase their own. Your lips are especially vulnerable to sun damage. Lip balm with sun protection factor should be used before tanning.
Start Slow
For first-time tanners, less is more. It's tempting to think that the longer you spend in a tanning bed, the darker you'll get, but doing so can actually cause serious skin damage. You should tan for about five to seven minutes the first time. Fair-skinned individuals may find that even after several tanning treatments, this is their limit. Those with darker skin tones may gradually increase their tanning duration by one minute every session.
Listen to Your Body
Your body always senses when anything is wrong. Pay close attention to how you feel while you tan. Get out of the tanning bed if you feel your skin getting too hot, red, or irritated.
