Orthobiologics In Spine Surgery: A New Frontier In Minimally Invasive Techniques

Stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), autologous conditioned plasma (ACP), and bone marrow aspirate concentrate are a few of the Orthobiologics therapies that are frequently used (BMAC). PRP is one of these and is gaining popularity as a unique therapeutic option for a variety of musculoskeletal problems with little adverse effects. These ailments include lateral epicondylar tendinopathy, rotator cuff tears, sub-acromial impingement, shoulder osteoarthritis, patellar tendinosis, and knee osteoarthritis.

Orthobiologics are biologics and cellular therapies used in orthopaedics that include a variety of items like grafts, bone void fillers, stem cells, and recombinant growth factors. The term "orthopaedics" also refers to regenerative cellular therapy. Orthobiologics are pharmaceuticals used to treat musculoskeletal system injuries and ailments. They serve to support the body's natural healing processes and are often generated from organic components like proteins or cells.

One of the most promising areas of Orthobiologics is the use of growth factors to promote tissue regeneration. Growth factors are natural proteins that stimulate the growth and proliferation of cells. In the context of orthopedics, growth factors can be used to stimulate the growth of bone, cartilage, or other musculoskeletal tissues. Some of the most commonly used growth factors in orthobiologics include bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β).

BMPs are a family of proteins that play a critical role in bone formation and repair. They are normally produced by cells in the body and act as signaling molecules to promote the growth and differentiation of bone cells. BMPs can be used in Orthobiologics to stimulate the growth of new bone tissue and promote bone healing. In some cases, BMPs may be used in place of bone grafts to promote bone growth in patients with bone defects or fractures.
