Unveiling the Role of Stem Cell Transplantation in Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Treatment

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a form of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system. For patients with aggressive or relapsed NHL, stem cell transplantation offers a potentially curative Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treatment option. Stem cell transplantation, also known as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), involves the infusion of healthy stem cells into the patient's bloodstream. These stem cells can be sourced from the patient themselves (autologous transplant) or from a compatible donor (allogeneic transplant). In autologous HSCT, the patient's stem cells are harvested and preserved before undergoing high-dose chemotherapy. After chemotherapy, the preserved stem cells are reinfused into the patient's body.

This procedure helps to restore the bone marrow and immune system, which were affected by the aggressive chemotherapy. Autologous HSCT is particularly effective in achieving remission and prolonging survival in NHL patients who have responded well to initial treatments. Allogeneic HSCT, on the other hand, involves using a donor's healthy stem cells to rebuild the patient's immune system. This type of transplantation offers the additional benefit of the "graft-versus-lymphoma" effect, where the transplanted immune cells may recognize and attack remaining cancer cells. However, allogeneic HSCT carries a higher risk of complications, such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), where the transplanted immune cells attack the recipient's healthy tissues. Stem cell transplantation is a complex and demanding procedure that requires careful patient selection and management.  Not all NHL patients are eligible for this treatment, and the decision to undergo transplantation should be made in consultation with a multidisciplinary medical team.
