Challenges Faced by India Smart Water Management Market: The existing initiatives by the government are directed towards water distribution in rural areas. With an increasingly changing urban-rural population in India, the consumption of water requires the current systems of monitoring and data collection to become more pervasive as well as sophisticated. The mandates on household/commercial water metering are due for revisions, such that IoT-enabled technology is adopted at a faster pace. Another challenge that this market faces is high upfront costs for startups. The proportion of water utility Startups taking up residential and commercial projects in India, is still less than just handful. The high costs of hardware manufacturing and software maintenance becomes one of the key hindrances.

Supportive Government Initiatives: The Ministry of Jal Shakti has taken up National Hydrology Project to establish a hydrological database, information system and scientific tools for effective planning and management of water resources. The proposed Project Development Objective (PDO) is to improve the extent, quality, and accessibility of water resources information and to strengthen the capacity of targeted water resources management institutions in India. Another initiative by the Government of India is Jal Jeevan Mission. Jal Jeevan Mission is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. This program will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation, rain water harvesting. The Jal Jeevan Mission is based on a community approach to water and will include extensive information, education and communication as a key component of the mission.
