70-84 loss to host China
Failed to reach the quarterfinals for only the second time in history
South Korea's men's basketball team fell short of a medal at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games for the first time in 17 years as they were upset by hosts China.
South Korea, led by head coach Chu Il-seung, fell to host China, 70-84, in the men's basketball quarterfinals at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium on Wednesday at 1 p.m. (ET).
With the loss, South Korea went home empty-handed for the first time in 17 years since the 2006 Doha Games (fifth place).
South Korea won silver at Guangzhou 2010, gold at Incheon 2014 and bronze at Jakarta-Palembang 2018.
Doha was also the second time since Manila 1954 that he failed to reach the quarterfinals in basketball.
'Doha disaster' followed by 'Hangzhou disaster'.
The Chinese played like the defending Jakarta-Palembang champions, playing with an air of ease throughout. They entertained the 18,000 home fans who packed the gym.
South Korea struggled in the offense. On offense, they struggled with China's fast and strong press, and on defense, they couldn't handle the organic movement.
It's a shame that Moon Sung-gon (KT) and Song Kyo-chang (Commerce), two of Choo's favorite pieces of forward basketball, went down with injuries.
Even so, the performance was disastrous.
If it was bad luck to meet China, the favorite, too early, it was bad luck.
It was self-inflicted. South Korea lost their final group game against Japan 77-83 on March 30, which cost them the top spot in the group and a direct ticket to the quarterfinals.
This forced them to play a quarterfinal game against Bahrain the day before. That game ended at about 11 p.m., and they played China again just 14 hours later.
Facing China in the quarterfinals was an unexpected scenario. We were objectively outclassed, and the schedule didn't help. They were coming off a blowout loss to second-ranked Japan in the group stage.
China took control of the game in the first quarter, led by Zhao Rui. He scored six points by himself.
Notably, despite his high average height of 202 centimeters, he didn't focus on attacking under the basket, but instead utilized space and operated organically.
South Korea gave up two three-pointers in the first quarter and didn't make one. Kim Jong-kyu (DB) tried to spark the offense, but the effect was short-lived.
Trailing 13-20 at the end of the first quarter, Korea scored seven straight points to start the second quarter and completely lost control of the game.
They couldn't find a rhythm in their offense while giving up 12 points in a row from 13-15 and fell behind 13-27, 14 points.
KCC's Ragan-ah and Kim Sun-hyung (SK) and Byun Jun-hyung's three-pointers seemed to change the mood, but that was it.
They gave up 14 points in a row from 20-29 to 20-43, a 23-point deficit. Complacent passing gave away the offense, and the offense didn't get any shots.
China had the freedom to do what they wanted inside and out, with fast breaks and pressure.
Chu Il-seung-ho ended the first half trailing 30-50.
South Korea shot 12 three-pointers in the first half, making just two (17%), and had a poor field goal percentage of 33%. They could barely penetrate China's defense.
South Korea failed to close the gap in the third quarter. They finished the quarter down 45-66 and lost the game. They couldn't catch up in the fourth quarter either.
South Korea was led by Ra Gun-ah with 14 points and Yang Hong-seok (LG) with 13 points. For China, Durun Wang (16 points) and Hu Jinqiu (14 points) led the way.
Former Chinese Basketball Association president Yao Ming, a legendary NBA center of Chinese descent, watched the game and attracted attention. 스포츠토토
