10 Strategies for Helping Your Autistic Child learn to spell

Tips from the Tomatis® Method may help you and your kid with APD have a more productive and pleasurable lesson experience.

1. Say everything slowly and clearly. Additionally, pausing while delivering instructions will help ensure your child fully comprehends your words.

2. Give your kid time to think about what you just stated. Before assuming a response or continuing, give your remarks some time to sink in.

3. Keep vocal explanations brief and to the point rather than going into great detail. Give precise directions and take one step at a time. It could be too much to ask your child to "clean up your room, put on your pyjamas, and brush your teeth."

4. Spend as little time working in a noisy or disruptive environment. For a child with APD, listening and processing are already challenging; distractions make it almost impossible.

5. Lessons scheduled during your child's busiest day will enhance brain function and lessen "meltdowns."

6. Ensure your child can see your mouth as you speak. This is crucial if she tends to confuse words with similar-sounding names because APD students have poor communication between their ears and brains.

Aligning everything will be easier if you keep your eyes on your mouth. When the brain absorbs auditory and visual clues, the sounds are "crispier."

7. When feasible, demonstrate rather than describe.

8. Compared to verbal explanations, visual demonstrations are much more effective. If your child with APD needs help picking up a new skill or concept, try visualising the knowledge.

9. Refrain from placing too much pressure on your child. Children with auditory processing issues may act out or argue when they don't understand something. If your child grows agitated and you anticipate a breakdown, return to a part of the lesson where they are more comfortable. Repeat your attempt to offer the new information when your child looks to be ready.

10. Success depends on constant and regular revision, especially for APD pupils. By performing daily reviews in your lessons, you can maintain ongoing improvement.

As an APD learner, your child will experience various difficulties, but there is still hope. Putting some of the advice mentioned above into practise during your teaching time, you can assist your child in overcoming these problems.
