The team that achieved the best results in the history of the World Aquatics Championships made a ‘golden return’.

The management team, which departed on the 7th of this month and participated in the 2024 International Aquatics Federation World Championships held in Doha, Qatar, returned home through Incheon Airport on the afternoon of the 19th.

It's a pleasant way home. The management team achieved its best performance ever at the Doha World Championships, winning two gold medals and one silver medal.

Previously, the highest performance achieved by Korean management in a single world championship competition was one gold medal and one bronze medal at the 2007 Melbourne Games. Tae-hwan Park won a gold medal in the men's 400m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle.

He won a total of five medals, including the two bronze medals he won in diving.

Korean swimming, which won five medals, finished the Doha World Championships in 8th place in the overall ranking. It surpassed the 13th place recorded at the 2007 Melbourne competition and reached its highest ranking ever.

Most top athletes gave up participating in this competition to focus on the 2024 Paris Olympics, which opens in July.

The management team was also not in the best condition as it participated in this competition after a tight schedule, including the Fukuoka World Championships in July of last year, the Hangzhou Asian Games in September, the National Sports Festival in October, and the National Team Selection Tournament in November.

Nevertheless, the management team, referred to as the 'golden generation', achieved remarkable results.

There were two gold medalists. Before this competition, the only Korean player to win a gold medal at the World Championships was Tae-hwan Park (35), but Sun-woo Hwang (21) and Woo-min Kim (23, Gangwon Provincial Office) followed suit.

It was Kim Woo-min who first announced the bad news. Kim Woo-min won the gold medal in the men's 400m freestyle final held on the 12th (Korean time) with a time of 3 minutes 42.71 seconds.

Kim Woo-min kissed the gold medal by 1 second 21 seconds ahead of his previous personal record of 3 minutes 43.92 seconds, set when he took 5th place in the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships final, in about 7 months.

Hwang Seon-woo, who then sortied, continued the gold vein.

Sunwoo Hwang took first place in the men's 200m freestyle final held on the 14th with a time of 1 minute 44.75 seconds.

In this event, Hwang Sun-woo, who won a silver medal at the 2022 Budapest Games and a bronze medal at the 2023 Fukuoka Games, became the first Korean athlete to successfully win medals at three consecutive World Championships.

In addition, he became the second Asian athlete ever to win a gold medal in the men's 200m freestyle, following Sun Yang (China) in Budapest in 2017 and Gwangju in 2019.

Sunwoo Hwang also advanced to the finals of the 100m freestyle and took 5th place. This is the highest ranking ever for a Korean athlete in this sport.

Sun-woo Hwang and Woo-min Kim joined forces with Ho-jun Lee (23, Jeju City Hall), Jae-hoon Yang (26, Gangwon Provincial Office), and Lee Yu-yeon (24, Goyang City Hall) to win a silver medal in the men's 800m relay. He took second place in the final with a time of 7 minutes 01.94 seconds.

Although he missed out on the gold medal by 0.1 seconds to China (7 minutes 01.84 seconds), he achieved the feat of winning the first World Championships team medal in Korean swimming history.

Team medals cannot be made by relying on just one person. It was an achievement that confirmed the overall development of Korean swimming.

Hwang Seon-woo, who increased his total number of World Championship medals to 4 (1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze), was also named as the Korean individual with the most medals at the World Aquatics Championships.

After a short break, the management team prepares for the national team selection competition for the Paris Olympics. The selection competition will be held from March 22nd to 27th at the Gimcheon Indoor Swimming Pool in Gyeongsangbuk-do. 일본야동
