We're Going on a Trip
Adventuring with Claire and Peter is one of our greatest joys, and taking them to Winston-Salem is always a thrill. Claire, our little thrill-seeker, loves our fun tradition of waking up early on the day of our trip. We dress in our cozy loungewear and whisper in their ears, "We're going on an adventure." It’s such an exciting way to kick off our road trip!
Let's Drive
Claire and Peter enjoy the car ride with their Yoto Player, a birthday gift for Peter from his great aunt, which has been a big hit, especially for long journeys. Our road trips wouldn’t be complete without a stop for McDonald’s breakfast—it’s a nostalgic treat that makes us feel like kids again. Before reaching Winston-Salem, we visit Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church as a family. We also love stopping at Salem Moravian Graveyard, or “God’s Acre,” a beautiful cemetery with stunning trees and rich history that we always take time to explore and honor.
The Graylyn Estate
Our favorite place to stay is The Graylyn Estate, an elegant, historic hotel that adds character and enjoyment to our travels in Winston-Salem. With varying accommodation pricing throughout the year, we’ve always been pleased with the rates and offerings. The Graylyn features a wonderful pool, complimentary ice cream for the kids, tea, coffee, water, tennis courts, and croquet—perfect activities for families.
We love picnicking on the lawn with a rotisserie chicken, and the on-site restaurants offer delicious breakfast options. Claire and Peter enjoy playing chess with their dad or relaxing in one of the estate’s cozy sitting rooms.
There Is Fun to Be Had
Our family enjoys visiting the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, just across the street from Graylyn. Claire and Peter explore and engage in on-the-go homeschooling there. The museum’s gift shop is a hit, especially when Claire discovered her beloved paper dolls.
All Things Food and Shopping
Mozelle’s Fresh Southern Bistro is a favorite spot where Claire found her signature dish—Tomato Pie. Although she prefers making and serving it to eating it, it’s still a cherished tradition. Dough-Joes coffee is another must-visit, with a frequent buyers card that we go through quickly because their offerings are simply delicious. Claire and Peter love their vanilla steamers and feel so grown up drinking them.
Across the street from Dough-Joes is a charming boutique called McCalls, which I absolutely adore. They offer both children’s and women’s items, and I found the best pajamas ever—P.JAMAS! Claire and Peter loved carrying their shopping bags around the hotel, making it a memorable shopping trip.
Our Experience at The Graylyn Estate
Graylyn Estate offers a beautiful experience with great staff who make us feel well cared for. Whether it’s Christmas with festive lights or summer fun by the pool, each season offers something special. The meticulously groomed grounds and blooming tulips in spring bring life and joy to our visits. We love exploring the history and beauty of Winston-Salem with Claire and Peter as they grow up.
