SS 304 is an austenitic stainless steel grade with 18% chromium and 8% nickel, non-magnetic in the annealed condition but can become magnetic after cold working. It is widely used for various applications due to its versatility. T304 is easily weldable and preferred for deep drawn components due to its excellent ductility. SS 304L exhibits high resistance to oxidation up to 899°C, with a maximum intermittent exposure temperature of 816°C.
SS 304L, the low carbon version of 304, retains good corrosion resistance even in aggressive environments and can be used in the as-welded condition. It possesses excellent welding characteristics and can be welded using all standard methods. Post-weld annealing may be necessary to relieve stress from severe forming or machining operations.
