What are Adjectives?
"Adjectives are describing words."
A word used with a noun to express the quality, quantity, numbers or point out person / thing, is called adjectives. They tell us what kind of, how many, how much, what color etc. persons, places, animals and things are.
» Adjectives are used as:
(1) Attributive use
(2) Predicative use
Uses of Adjectives: (1) Attributive use
When an adjective word(s) are used with a noun, is called attributive use.
- Word Adjective+Noun Word Adjective+Noun Girl Beautiful Girl Building Large Building Tree Tall Tree Book Nice Book Flower Lovely Flower Student Clever Student Examples: • This is a tall tree.
- • Rose is a lovely flower.
- • Mona is a beautiful girl.
- • That is a large building.

(2) Predicative use
When an adjective word(s) are used with a verb and forms a part of predicate is called predicative use.
- Examples: • He is alive.
- • She is afraid.
- • They are dead.
- • The boy is lazy.
- • He looked happy.
Other usage of Adjectives : (Before Noun and After Noun)
Usually / Generally adjective is placed before the noun but sometimes it is placed after noun also.
- Examples: Adjective Before Noun • She has a sweet (Adj.) voice. (Noun).
- • We found an empty (Adj.) room. (Noun).
- • Anu likes spicy (Adj.) food. (Noun). - (What kind of food?)
- • Alok won three (Adj.) prizes. (Noun). - (How many prizes?)
- • I gave her a red (Adj.) rose. (Noun). - (Rose of what color?)
- Examples: Adjective After Noun • The Sun (Noun) is bright. (Adj.)
- • Her voice (Noun) is/was sweet. (Adj.)
- • The room (Noun) is/was empty. (Adj.)
