Best Places to Experience Wildlife on a Goa Wildlife Tour

Goa may be India’s smallest state in terms of area and population, but it is blessed with different soil types and altitudes. Forests here vary from mangroves in muddy river banks and open scrub jungles to sub-tropical hill forests.

Apart from flora of different kinds, you will also see several species of animals such as mongoose, slender loris, crocodiles, Indian bison, macaque, and sambar deer. More than 400 species of birds are present, although luck and time of the year will ultimately determine what you see during the Goa wildlife tour.

Popular Places for Wildlife in Goa

Although its sightings are relatively limited, you may be lucky enough to witness the Indian leopard in Goa. Various plant and animal species here are protected in sanctuaries like Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary, and Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Let’s have a closer look at these and a few more of them:

Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary- Being here in winter will allow you to see both native birds and migratory birds in large numbers. A watchtower is present to observe birds in flight.

·

Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary- Built over an area of 240 square kilometres, Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is the largest among Goa’s sanctuaries. Indian bison, sambar deer, Malayan giant squirrels, and the reclusive leopard are some of the animals here. Mollem National Park stands within the sanctuary and gets numerous visitors due to its proximity to the Dudhsagar Falls.

Bondla Widlife Sanctuary- Porcupines, flying lizards, and different wild cats can be seen at this small sanctuary. A deer safari park in the area will give you sambar and gaur deer sightings.

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary- While most of the sanctuaries are in North Goa, this one is in the South. It is characterised by a dense forest with monkeys, gaurs, birds, and wild boars. You may view a watering hole that draws several animals while on a watchtower here.

Sal Backwaters-

Giving tough competition to Kerala is Goa’s very own Sal Backwaters. This lesser-known network of lagoons is filled with mangroves and grassy marshes that create a welcome habitat for cormorants, kingfishers, and other avian species.

Goa is on the Western Ghats, a UNESCO heritage site that is home to different species of birds, reptiles, and mammals. After an exciting Goa wildlife tour, consider staying at the luxurious Nature’s Nest Resort.
