Baptism is one of the most significant and controversial topics in Christianity. For members of the Church of Christ it holds an attention-grabbing position – not just as a tradition or symbol that is advocated, but a biblical directive that absolutely needs to be followed in order to be saved. This is not an exhaustive study of all the theological views existing among the denominations on the subject of baptism, but we, as the Church of Christ, make a conscious attempt to emulate the New Testament pattern as closely as possible, so for us baptism is our response to God’s grace that is received by faith—a faith that obeys and pleases Him.
At the Church of Christ in Ocala FL, we are dedicated to helping you learn the truth about what Scripture says about Baptism. Our purpose is not to invent doctrines of men but to bring back and live what the 1st century church taught as shown in the New Testament. This includes knowing the reasons for baptism, what happens to the person in the spirit realm when baptized, and where baptism fits in the context of the fuller message of the gospel.
What Is Baptism?
The original Greek word for the term, Baptizo, means, “to be immersed.” Therefore, in the Church of Christ, baptism by immersion in the water is practiced, which represents the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3–4). It’s more then just a public affirmation of faith, but an act of obedience that brings forgiveness of sins and is placed into the body of Christ.
Why is baptism necessary for salvation?
And he answered them, as recounted in Acts 2:38, when people at Pentecost asked what they needed to do to be saved: “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” This immediate link between baptism and salvation is a fundamental article of faith in the Church of Christ. Likewise, in Mark 16:16, Jesus spoke, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” These texts, among other, could not be any more clear that baptism is not an option, but an imperative operation that you must undergo before you can have a saving relationship with Christ.
Baptism is the place were people’s sins are washed away (Acts 22:16), and they are born again into a new life. (Again let me repeat, not due to the water, but faith of the working of God) (Colossians 2:12).
A Call to Biblical Obedience
Knowing baptism in a biblical sense, helps to define what it is not, as well as its importance in the Christian’s life. It is something more than a ceremony; it is a profession of submission, obedience and confidence. It is the second that one goes from being outside of Christ to in Him (Galatians 3:27).
