Pot Limit Omaha is the action game that has taken the poker industry by storm. Players who enjoy fast-paced action, big pots, and excitement are all shifting towards Pot Limit Omaha as their preferred Poker variant.
Texas Hold’em, a game of patience and strategy, which has dominated the Poker World for a long time, is now matched in popularity by Pot Limit Omaha. What’s Pot Limit Omaha? What are its variants? Why is it getting so popular? Let's explore it all in this blog.
What is Pot Limit Omaha?
It's a fast-paced variant of Poker where every player is dealt four hole cards face down, and there are five community cards (flop, turn, and river) dealt face up. Each player can only use exactly two out of the four hole cards dealt to them and exactly three out of the five community cards to make the best possible hand. Unlike No Limit Hold’em, where you can use all hole cards and all community cards to make the best possible combination, in Pot Limit Omaha, players must use the exact number of hole cards (two) and community cards (three) to form a hand.
The betting structure is also unique, and as the name suggests, a player can only raise to the total value of the pot. The formula for a pot limit bet is as follows:
Pre-flop: Previous bet amount + Call amount + Total Bets on the table
Flop, Turn, and River: Previous bet amount + Call amount + Total Bets on the table + Pot amount.
This formula is applicable while calculating the pot bet, and the only difference between the pre-flop round and post-flop rounds is that the total value of the pot is taken into consideration in the post-flop rounds.
Variants of Pot Limit Omaha
Pot Limit Omaha has three variants of the game, i.e., Pot Limit Omaha (PLO4), Pot Limit Omaha 5 (PLO5), and Pot Limit Omaha 6 (PLO6). In each variant, the players will be dealt four hole cards (PLO 4), five hole cards (PLO 5), and six hole cards (PLO 6), respectively. However, the players must use exactly two hole cards from the four, five, or six hole cards dealt to them, and exactly three community cards from the five community cards dealt on the table, to make the best possible hand.

Rules of Pot Limit Omaha
Now that we have introduced what Pot Limit Omaha is, the different variants of the game, and the primary rules of the game, it’s time to dive a little deeper into the rules of the game.
Deal: Every player is dealt four, five, or six (PLO4, PLO5, and PLO6) hole cards, depending on the variant of PLO.
Betting Rounds: Just like in Texas Hold’em Poker, in Pot Limit Omaha, there are four betting rounds, the Pre-Flop round (hole cards dealt to players), Flop round (three community cards open), Turn Round (fourth community card opens), and River Round (fifth community card opens). The Small Blind and the Big Blind are posted in the Pre-Flop round, and the betting begins.
Making a hand: Each player must use exactly two hole cards from the total hole cards dealt to them and exactly three community cards from the five community cards dealt face up on the table to make the best possible hand. For example, if the Pot Limit Omaha variant is PLO 5 and your hole cards are 9♠ 10♠ J♠ Q♠ and community cards are 3♠ 2♠ 10♦ J♥ J♣, your best possible hand combination is Jacks Full of Tens (J J J 10 10). Here, you used 10♠ J♠ from the hole cards and 10♦ J♥ J♣ from the community cards.
Pot Limit Bets: In every variant of Pot Limit Omaha, whether you are playing PLO4, PLO5, or PLO6, the maximum bet or raise is limited to the Pot amount. As per the Pot Limit Bet formula, let's share an example. The Small Blind is 100 and the Big Blind is 200 in the pre-flop round. Now, the maximum amount the next player, UTG, can raise is 200 + 200 + 300 = 700 (Previous Bet Amount + Call Amount + Total Bets).
What Makes PLO an Action Game?
More Cards, More Action: In Pot Limit Omaha, players are dealt more hole cards (4, 5, or 6) as compared to Texas Hold’em (2). This is where the action starts to brew straight away. More cards in hand means the players do not have to restrict themselves to playing only premium pocket pairs and can go ahead and play a wider range of hands.
Close Equities: Unlike Texas Hold’em, where some hands like Pocket Aces are a massive favorite against other starting hands, in Pot Limit Omaha, there is no such starting hand that is a huge underdog against another hand. This also motivates players to play more hands and see the flop often.
Big Draws, Big Swings: In PLO, there are way too many possible draws and combinations than in Texas Hold’em, and it exclusively has a draw, known as a wrap (straight draw with multiple outs). This often forces players to commit a lot of amoney chasing these draws, resulting in big pots and big swings.
Pot Limit Betting: Since players cannot go All-In, pots usually build gradually. This creates multiple betting streets with multiple pot-size bets and more players getting involved in every hand. This fills each hand with excitement and thrill, and with each betting round, the pots keep getting bigger and bigger.
