How to Change Colors in Crochet
When you want to switch yarn colors in a project (stripes, color blocks, etc.), the basic idea is:
1. Decide Where to Change
At the end of a row: change color before you finish your last stitch of the row.
Mid-row: change color during a stitch so the new color starts in the middle of your work.
2. Color Change at End of Row

Work your last stitch of the old color almost completely.

Don’t pull through the last loop with the old color.

Instead, pick up your new color yarn and pull it through those final loops.

Turn and begin the next row with the new color.

👉 This gives you a clean transition between rows.
3. Color Change in the Middle of a Row

Crochet normally until you reach the stitch where you want the new color.

Work the stitch of the old color up to the last two loops on your hook.

Drop the old color and draw up the new color through those final loops.

Continue crocheting with the new color.

4. Handling Yarn & Ends
Carry unused yarn along the row (crochet over it) if you’ll be using it again soon — common in tapestry crochet.
