Slit Lamp

A slit lamp is essentially a high-powered microscope that allows us to examine your eyes in great detail. It gets its name from the adjustable beam of light, which can be widened into a circular beam or narrowed into a thin slit. Most of the time, we use the slit setting because it provides the most precise view.

By directing the slit of light at an angle toward the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, we can evaluate its thickness and individual layers. This helps us determine whether those layers are healthy or showing signs of disease or damage.

Using angled light also allows us to examine the fluid between the cornea and the iris. If we see floating cells or cloudiness in this fluid, it can indicate inflammation inside the eye.

Attached to the slit lamp is a Goldmann tonometer, which we use to measure eye pressure and screen for glaucoma. When needed, we can also dilate your pupils, place a special lens in front of the light, and examine the retina in very fine detail.

We use a variety of lenses with different shapes and sizes during this process. Each lens provides a different level of magnification and field of view, allowing us to closely inspect specific structures inside the eye.

Because of its microscope-level detail and versatility, the slit lamp is the primary instrument used during an eye exam Fort Myers FL. It is a highly advanced and valuable piece of equipment, and one of the most important tools in comprehensive eye care.
