While the on-premises market for SharePoint alone believed to be worth around 2 billion dollars for Microsoft, it is not surprising that Microsoft will remain committed to providing businesses with an online and on-premises version of SharePoint.

This is an important thing to note is that some features of Sharepoint online which require such complex and costly computing environments that they will be never delivered to the on-premises product and therefore we feel it is right to consider SharePoint server as a subset of SharePoint Online.
