Types of Vitreous sealantsThe main types of vitreous sealants used are gases, silicone oils and perfluorocarbon liquids. Being temporary tamponades, they reduce the need for long-term gas posture or later silicone oil removal surgery. For simple rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with no proliferative changes, gas tamponades are usually preferred. More complex or recurrent cases may benefit from longer acting silicone oil or initial use of perfluorocarbon liquid. - Drug-eluting coatings on silicone oil droplets may enable controlled release of anti-proliferative drugs to further reduce failure rates.

What exactly does PVD (posterior vitreous detachment) mean? When the gel that covers the eyeball separates from the retina, it results in posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). Up until the PVD is finished and the vitreous gel is solely connected to the retina at the vitreous base, the vitreous gel continues to compress over the next one to three months. The space between the condensed vitreous gel and the retina is filled with clear vitreous fluid. These abnormalities can develop into more serious problems like epiretinal membrane or retinal detachment, which can impair vision permanently.
