It was bound to happen, and now Huawei is in the lead.

The Chinese company unveiled yesterday their next-generation chipset for smartphones, the Kirin 970.

It’s the first in the world to come with neural processing unit (or NPU) bringing on-device AI capabilities that will surely amaze us in the future.

The new chipset packs an octa-core CPU with 4×2.4GHz Cortex-A73 and 4×1.8GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and a 12-core Mali-G72MP12 GPU.

It’s built on a 10nm process and contains 5.5 billion transistors on a single square centimeter – much powerful then the Snapdragon 835 SoC or Apple’s A10.

Huawei says its ‘new heterogeneous computing architecture delivers up to 25x the performance with 50x greater efficiency’ than your typical quad-core Cortex-A73 CPU cluster helping it outperform other chips on the market in AI tasks.

With the Ryzen 3 family arriving in the form of the $110 Ryzen 3 1200 and $130 Ryzen 3 1300X, it’s finally time to move past the question of whether you should buy a Ryzen chip, and move onto which one you should buy.

Less cores means faster clock speed on each core, so the results are going to vary based on how many cores each chip has, whether it’s equipped with AMD’s Extended Frequency Range — denoted by an X after the number — and a splash of luck for having a highly-stable single core.

Aside from that, it’s rare to see a single-core workload that’s intensive in modern programs.

More cores mean more power, particularly when it comes to encoding video, and the most expensive Ryzen 7 1800X manages to crank out a much faster time than chips with less cores.

However, the field is more compact if you have modest needs.

While these scores represent each pairing’s potential power, it isn’t always indicative of real-world gaming, which is where our real-world game tests come into play.

The ever-increasing clock speeds of previous decades have gone, with CPU speeds sitting at just over 3GHz for most of the last decade.

Manufacturers have been able to improve performance at that clock speed with clever design and impressive feats of miniaturisation, but that has its limits too.

The reason we don't run silicon chips much faster than 3GHz is because they begin to consume large amounts of power and generate large amounts of heat.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is getting an update today that includes optimization for CPUs that have 6 or more compute cores.

That patch, which also fixes a handful of bugs in the last-person-standing shooter from developer Bluehole, hits the test servers today.

The studio says that if it’s stable, it will roll out the update to its live servers by Thursday.

Getting support for multicore CPUs could make a difference for a game like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds due to its persistent nature.

It has up to 100 players all running around a map at the same time, and that puts a lot of processing on the CPU as opposed to the graphics card.

We’ll have to see if this new optimization makes a difference, but it is something that theoretically could improve performance for anyone rocking a chip with more than 4 cores.

AMD has put a date on Threadripper's release, and also gave full details for the entire processor line, including a surprise entry-level addition.

Computing power users have been hearing about AMD’s Threadripper chips since May of 2017.

AMD can’t hold back any longer, and at Capsaicin Siggraph in 2017, it finally rolled out the launch details for its beefy new line of professional workload chips.

Most of the high-end Threadripper options are what we expected to see, based on earlier official teasers, as well as unofficial leaks.

It cuts down to eight cores and sixteen threads, with a 3.8GHz base clock and 4.0GHz boost clock.

Of course, chips with these numbers aren’t intended for light gaming, or checking your email.

Ubisoft is pushing back against reports that the DRM used in Assassin's Creed: Origins is eating up significant CPU cycles and causing performance problems for many people playing the PC version of the game.

The explosive accusation comes from noted game cracker Voksi, who tells TorrentFreak that an analysis of Origins' binaries shows the game adds a protection method called VMProtect on top of well-known (and now easily cracked) Denuvo DRM.

As the VMProtect webpage explains, its software protects crucial game code from cracking via mutation (i.e., obfuscating code with "garbage" commands and misdirected jumps) and virtualization (i.e., running the code in a self-contained "non-standard" virtual machine that is harder to analyze and modify).

Voksi alleges that Origins uses VMProtect's virtualization protection, which "tank[s] the game’s performance by 30-40%, demanding that people have a more expensive CPU to play the game properly, only because of the DRM.

It’s anti-consumer and a disgusting move."

In a Reddit thread, Voksi further detailed how breakpoint debugging of the code showed VMProtect's code being "called non-stop" in the game's core control loop.

With its Ryzen processors, AMD is finally challenging Intel in the CPU space.

But those rushing to buy the chips from Amazon could be in for a nasty surprise.

In both instances, the chips were Intel Celeron processors disguised to look like AMD’s products.

Just over a week ago, Reddit user sh00ter999 posted pictures of what was supposed to be his new Ryzen 1700.

It was an LGA-based Intel processor with the markings scrubbed off and replaced with Ryzen markings that were part of a transparent sticker.

Not only did this CPU come with the wrong (damaged) heatsink, its packaging looked as if it had been sealed with a lighter.
