Get a real-time feed of what Pokémon are spawning in Pokémon Go, and exactly where.

Pokevision automatically scans a few key areas, such as the pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

If you want the best Pokémon Go map, why not use the game s servers to tell you where to find Pokémon?

That s the aim of Pokévision, which claims to use the the game s own API to discover the Pokémon in your midst.

Pokévision s premise is simple: It taps the game s API to provide a real-time cheat sheet pointing to the locations of the nearest Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Over at Macworld, they dig into the Calendar function, which is easy to set up and use, then keeps your data as private as possible.

Generally speaking, most of us are just fine using Google, iCloud, or Exchange for our calendar needs, but if you d prefer to use something that you control, macOS Server does the job really well.

It works pretty much just like iCloud, with push notifications, syncing across devices, and group scheduling.

From servers to networks, virtualisation has turned out to be an IT game changer.

It also benefits companies - colocators, data centre providers, web services providers - in terms of reducing the amount of energy needed to power the server and reducing resources wastage.

The main areas where virtualisation has become a de facto trend are server virtualisation, network virtualisation and storage virtualisation.

Server virtualisation refers to splitting one physical server into smaller virtual ones.

With server virtualisation, details about the server, including OSs, for example, are masked from server users.

A virtualised network is a software container that presents logical network components logical switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, VPNs and more to connected workloads.

Speaking last week's Infrastructure Operations & Data Centre Summit in Sydney, Butler said the days of buying a server to handle a specific workload are nearly gone.

Instead, you'll soon shop for collections of components that can be assembled into rigs capable of handling different workloads at different times.

Each buyer will end up with a different cocktail, Butler said, a concept HP and Cisco currently call composable infrastructure.

Another big change he predicts is photonics inside the chipset, to speed communications over the motherboard.

We are not despondent but believe the company needs to demonstrate it can build on the assets it acquired, he said.

Taiwan and China's big ODMs will, he said, bid for your business with workload-specific boxes tailored to different needs.

Cloud management biz Scalr.com was yesterday hit by an outage which knocked customer websites offline.

In a post, the company said the problem had been due to an update that included flawed logic, causing server records to be removed but not AWS servers or other cloud servers.

One customer got in touch this morning to complain the company had yet to issue an apology or discuss compensation.

He said: "Yesterday, one of our customer websites stopped working as the database server was no longer contactable.

"It turns out that Scalr had accidentally removed all their DNS entries, resulting in another server being spawned for us in AWS, without our knowledge, even though there was no issue with the existing server.

"This obviously cost us, no just in lost revenue and downtime, but also because we were then paying for a second server we did not need," he claimed.

Business changes come faster than ever before — and the reasoning behind those changes all come down to information.

Information held by a company about their suppliers, employees, customers, and others lead directly to tasks handled more quickly and more efficiently.

That means their information data stockpile — a company’s database servers — can make or break a business.

The person assigned to keep those servers running fast and happy has some major responsibilities…with a hefty paycheck to match.

With the instruction in this MCSA SQL Server Certification Training Bundle ($19, over 90 percent off from TNW Deals), you’ll learn how to get certified as the Microsoft database guru in your company.

These courses are focused on the proper care, feeding and preservation of Microsoft databases, including their Azure cloud-based data storage systems.

A new report is predicting that the number of servers shipped globally will see healthy growth this year, and will increase by 4.89% when compared to 2017.

This forecast comes from DRAMeXchange (a division of TrendForce), and it noted that shipment level slightly declined in the first quarter of this year.

However, Q2 will see a recovery, and an increase of almost 10% compared to Q1, according to the firm’s figures.

And as mentioned, server shipment levels will increase by 4.89% throughout 2018, with that increase mainly driven by orders from North American companies.

Enterprise servers still account for the majority of shipments, with servers shipped to the big cloud operators to be used in giant (‘hyperscale’) data centers comprising 20 to 30% of total shipments.

However, as more companies look to shift to the cloud and platform-as-a-service, DRAMeXchange believes that server shipments for such hyperscale data center usage will increase to almost 40% come 2020.

The company was the only vendor in the top five to show growth in Q1.

Global server revenue declined annually by 2.3% in Q1 to $13bn, but HPE registered an increase of 3.3%, from $3.2bn to $3.3bn.

Even though overall revenue declined, shipment estimates increased by 1.7% compared with Q1 of 2015.

The enterprise and small or midsize business SMB segments remain relatively flat as end users in these segments accommodated their increased application requirements through virtualisation and considered cloud alternatives."

Lenovo and Cisco were at fourth and fifth places with market shares of 6.7% and 6.5%, respectively.

Gartner's data reveals that shipments were down across all geographical regions, apart from Asia Pacific, where revenue increased 9.7% on last year against an 8.4% year-on-year rise in shipments.

An Interpol investigation has revealed a worrying degree of insecurity in south-east Asian countries, with even government-operated web servers infected to operate as command and control systems for bot-herders.

The investigation turned up and shut down 9,000 C servers across “hundreds” of compromised Websites in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Interpol worked with investigators from all the listed countries, with assistance from China, its announcement says.

Trend Micro, Kaspersky Lab, Cyber Defense Institute, Booz Allen Hamilton, British Telecom, Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks took part in the investigation, Interpol says.

Malware found on the servers included ransomware operations, DDoS operations, and spam distribution, with Trend Micro saying most of the infections resulted from an unnamed WordPress plugin exploit.

The INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) reckons the operation will help it push back against Asian cybercrime operations.

Q316 market winners and losers.

According to Gartner, the third quarter of 2016 saw a decline of 5.8 percent year over year in worldwide server revenue and a 2.6 percent decline in market shipments from 2015.

Cisco was only supplier in the top five to increase server revenues within Q3 2016.

HPE, Dell and Lenovo all experienced declines in both server revenue and shipments, whilst Huawei and Inspur Electronics saw growth in its shipments.

Figures show that HPE continued as leader in the worldwide server market, despite a decline of 11.8 percent, collecting a total of 25.5 percent market share.

The company announced very recently that it will be extending its composable infrastructure to cloud and hyper-converged offerings, to include a software update for the HPE Hyper Converged 380 server and a new version of HPE Helion CloudSystem.

When you’re a company the size of Facebook with more than two billion users on millions of servers, running thousands of configuration changes every day involving trillions of configuration checks, as you can imagine, configuration is kind of a big deal.

To solve their unique issues, the company developed a new configuration delivery process called Location Aware Delivery or LAD for short.

Before developing LAD, the company had been using an open source tool called Zoo Keeper to distribute configuration data, and while that tool worked, it had some fairly substantial limitations for a company the size of Facebook.

Perhaps the largest of those was being limited to 5 MB distributions with configurations limited to 2500 subscribers at a time.

Facebook wanted to create a tool that overcame those limitations, separated the data from the distribution mechanism, had a latency time of less than five seconds and supported 10X more files than Zoo Keeper.

Oh yes, and it wanted all of that to run on millions of clients and handle the crazy update rates and traffic spikes that only Facebook could bring to the table.

The term refurbished has a negative connotation, conjuring images of open box returns and non-existent warranties, but in at least one case – Dell's ecosystem – that narrative doesn't quite fit.

The company has revenues of more than $20m per year, with 20 per cent growth year over year for the past five years.

It's worth noting that Dell doesn't build servers and then just keep endless warehouses full of gear waiting for customers to buy.

Dell actually uses a just-in-time delivery model that basically means servers are assembled as they are ordered.

There is, however, a tiny niggle of a problem.

For Dell's just-in-time delivery system to work, if someone cancels an order, they still build that server.

Two conversations over the past couple of weeks have surprised me in a good way about what infrastructure companies are doing about containers.

The first was with Atlantis Computing, which is known for its VDI-centric hyper-converged appliances.

Patrick Brennan, Atlantis' Senior Product Marketing Manager, pointed out that there are a lot of similarities between VDI workloads and containers.

Consider that virtual desktops are essentially stateless more on this in a moment .

I mean, hyper-converged infrastructure started out because Google and Facebook and friends were running these vast herds of simple, commodity servers with storage built in, right?

I'm probably very late to this realization, but of course hyper-converged gear will be good for containers!

Free decryption keys for the Cryakl ransomware were released last Friday – the fruit of an ongoing cybercrime investigation.

The keys were obtained during an ongoing investigation by the Belgian Federal Police and shared with the No More Ransom project, an industry-led effort to combat the growing scourge of file-encrypting malware.

The decryption utility was developed by security experts after the Belgian Federal Computer Crime unit located and seized a command-and-control server, allowing the recovery of decryption keys.

Kaspersky Lab provided technical expertise to the Belgian authorities.

The decryption tool allows the file decryption of most – but not all – versions of Cryakl.
