Fear is not a completely bad thing. It is an instinctive reaction to danger or distress. But when this fear starts to overtake our everyday life, we are letting it become a part of who we are. Starting something new or challenging can be understandably scary, and it is sure to cause additional stress and anxiety, apart from everyday issues. But if you are not ready to face your fears, it will be almost impossible to overcome them.

Let us look at some of the ways to help stop the fear of failure from taking over our lives.

1. Rationalize the situation
Rational fear is the one that helps us avoid obvious dangers, and keeps us from hurting ourselves. But fear can also be irrational, stopping us from doing things without any logical explanations. We can become fixated on the worst things that may (or may not) happen.

Always think through the things you fear. This usually leads to clarifications that help you understand how you can beat that fear and achieve success.

2. Cost of Missed Opportunities
The biggest cost of letting fear hold us back is those of missed opportunities. Most of us are content to stay within the confines of our known life. By avoiding high risk, we may also be rejecting high reward opportunities. For example, when it comes to a job, exploring outside our traditional domain may seem daunting and risky. But in the current job market, it is always best to diversify into newer technologies and skills. By staying here you are comfortable, you lose the opportunities you could have created for yourself.

3. Prepare Yourself
Life may seem like a series of challenges, and the feeling of being unprepared is a sure-shot way to lose motivation to fear. One of the biggest reasons we worry about doing things is that we consider ourselves unprepared.

Consciously prepare yourself to face new challenges in everyday life. Even though it is impossible to be entirely prepared for everything, most challenges that incite anxiety can be faced when you are ready. Proper preparation is the key to the confidence you need to achieve your goals.

4. Acknowledge the Excuses
We are constantly making excuses as to why we are not starting some new task that has been on the to-do list forever. We complain about the lack of time, that we can’t afford it right now, family needs time, or even that we are generally too busy to do what needs to be done. Even if the reason was relevant once upon a time, we get comfortable with it and stop doing anything about solving it.

The best way to deal with it is to recognize the excuses for what they are. When you objectively consider the reason you are not doing something, more often than not, you will find them just empty excuses. It gets easier to dismiss these excuses and move on to your success story.

5. Understand the Fear

We all instinctively fear the unknown. New challenges can seem daunting and potential consequences can appear far worse than they actually are. Understanding the situation and the fear that is arising out of it helps you put the entire thing in perspective.

This is where research plays an important role. Spend time on understanding all the potential outcomes and what impact they might have. Try to genuinely comprehend the risk of failure and the benefits of success. An objective analysis of the situation will help you see through the fear of failure and point to the logical way forward.

6. Build a Positivity Reservoir
Some people never seem to lack motivation. But most of us find it difficult to summon up the positivity needed to face life’s constant challenges. Usually, we are waiting around for some dose of motivation to raise us out of our slumps and achieve what we dream of.

This is why you should build your own positivity reservoir before you face your challenges. Clearly, state your goals and what is needed to achieve them. Train yourself to think positively, with positive reasons for why you have to do something or not do something. If you are feeling discouraged, uncomfortable or afraid, you will have a ready reservoir of positivity you can draw from for your personal motivation. A right spark can put you on the right path and carry you ahead to your goals.

7. Stay in the Present
Emotions have a way of running away into the future or the past. We often find ourselves obsessing over what went wrong before or what can go wrong in the future. Brains over-analyze possible situations, leading to irrational fears and a negative spiral of thoughts. It doesn’t mean we don’t prepare. You should plan and prepare. Then stop thinking about the future. Focus on what is important right now, what needs to be done in the present.

This keeps the stress and fear from your mind, letting you achieve your goals without distractions. Focusing on the present stops fear from taking over, and keeps you clear and positive.

8. Space for Growth
People can often give up on their goals because they simply believe they are beyond their capabilities. How do they even know what their capabilities are without testing them? Even if currently they are not equipped to deal with the situation, it is not fair to assume that they will never be good enough to attempt.

Successful people nurture a space for growth within themselves. They don’t think of abilities as being fixed at all. This keeps them prepared to go beyond their perceived limits. When they stop having a stopping point, they can keep looking for a better solution. If things become more challenging, they have the space to find new ways to face the challenges and work harder to achieve their goals.

9. Failure is Inevitable
Failing is part of the process. There is no way to avoid failure all the time. Sooner or later we will have to face failure and rejection, no matter how many precautions you take.

Keep the failure contained in the situation, and don’t panic. Even failure offers insights and can be beneficial in recognizing all the solutions that do not work on a problem. Reevaluate the failure to understand where it went wrong so the next time you will be prepared. Readjust strategy to the next approach, and keep your advantages ready for the next task on hand.
