Everything You Need To Know About Rigid Foam Insulation

Rigid foam is flexible, as well as being highly effective. It is ideal for floors, walls, and roofs. Please read this article, which describes the different types of insulation choices available and their properties.

Rigid foam insulation includes the following materials:

Expanded Polystyrene or EPS is both cheap and effective, probably the least expensive of all insulation materials. It also has the highest vapor-permeable quality among the three types of rigid foam available. It is also called beadboard and is usually white. It is mainly used as insulation for insulating concrete forms and structural panels.

Extruded Polystyrene or XPS is characterized by high compressive strength and water resistance. These features make it suitable for the below-grade insulation of slabs and foundation walls. It is smoother and denser, which makes it a better thermal insulator than its EPS counterpart and more expensive.

Polyisocyanurate or Polyiso, as it is referred to, is considered to be the most environmentally friendly, using water instead of ozone-depleting blowing agents. Because of its water absorption properties, it is not appropriate for applications of below-grade.

Still, its foil facing feature makes it highly suitable for external drainage planes and resistant to ignition. It is also quite expensive to use.

You can use rigid foam insulation for walls, foundations, roofs, retrofits, and new construction because these materials have a higher R-value than fiberglass or cellulose. All foam insulation products are petroleum derivatives. They're sold in sheets of different thicknesses.
