What Are The Rites And Rituals Of A Reddy Matrimony?

Have you ever heard about Reddys? Of course, you would have definitely heard about them for they are one of the most celebrated and counted amongst the social communities. Majorly, you can find Reddys in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. In addition to this, it is also to be noted here that the Reddy community was once said to be the warrior community who settled in there on the land of Andhra Pradesh.

So, after this, we would also like to talk about the weddings in Reddy Matrimonial or so to say, the rituals and rites that are involved in Reddy Matrimonial when two people tie the knot. Alike most of the Indian weddings, even Reddy matrimonial has its base in spirituality, but Tamil Matrimony can happen any time all throughout the year. Kicking aside the time period of Aashad, Bhadrapad, and Shunva, Reddys can walk down the aisle any time of the year. In this article, we will be talking about the wedding rituals of Reddys. But before we go on, we would like to direct your attention towards the fact that we have divided the article into two parts wherein the first part would talk about the pre-wedding rituals and the second one would talk about the wedding rituals. So, here we go!

Pre-Wedding Rituals

#1. Patrika
Fist and the foremost Reddy Matrimonial ritual is Patrika. For those who are unfamiliar to this, Patrika is the event, wherein the written contract is signed between both the families involved. The contract is signed out loud on a yellow cloth along with betel nuts, turmeric, and fruits, whilst the pandit chants the mantras.

#2. Nischithardham
Nischithardham or Muhurtham is the ritual that happens after the written contract. In this ritual, both the families decide on a date to meet and finalise the auspicious day of the wedding. Nischithardham itself declares that it decided upon the date of the marriage. The date is decided by the pandit Ji, the same pandit Ji who had matched the bride and the groom’s horoscopes. This ceremony winds up as the lighting of a beautiful brass lamp happen that is called ‘Nila Villaku’. In the end, the couple exchanges the rings and formalise their companionship.

#3. Vara Puja
Vara Puja is a holy puja that happens in regard to the bride and groom. The vara puja is exactly like that of shagun ceremony in Hindu weddings. In vara puja, the bride’s family offers sagan to the groom’s family in the form of new clothes as well as fids. This is the exact time when the bride’s family also invites the groom and his family for the wedding. Vara Puja also witnesses the washing of the groom’s feet with milk and the father of the bride wipes off his feet with a cloth.

#4. Pendlikoothuru, Paindlipilla or Haldipaspu
The haldi ceremony in Reddy matrimonial is named as Pendlikoothuru, Paindlipilla or Haldipaspu. This ceremony is exactly like haldi ceremony wherein the smashing of haldi and turmeric paste happens on the full body of the bride and the groom. The haldi past is basically made up of milk and turmeric. It is said that this ceremony happens to bring a little more glow to the bride and groom’s face.

#5. Kashi Yatra
Now Kashi Yatra is one of the most fun-filled wedding rituals in a Reddy matrimonial. The reason why we are saying that it is fun-filled is that in this the total drama happens. In this, the groom happens to pretend that he is not ready for the wedding and wants to renounce everything and would like to become a priest. Then this drama is succeeded by the bride’s brother, who comes to the groom and requests him to buck up for his upcoming responsibilities. In the end, the groom agrees to marry!

Wedding Day Rituals

#6. Vivaaham
Finally, the wedding day comes and more goosebumps happen to the bride and groom. Nonetheless, that’s what they have been waiting for quite long, no? So, basically in Reddy matrimony, the wedding venue is known as the Kalyana Mandapam, which is rented for the rites and rituals of the wedding. The entire wedding venue is dancing on the tunes of the traditional tunes of Nadaswarams and that. At the beginning of the wedding, young girls enter into the house holding an oil lamp or the sacred Changala Vatta, flowers, ashtamangalia, turmeric, and rice in their hands and queued up in two rows.

#7. Kanyadaan
As the name itself suggests Kanyadanam is the ceremony that is where the kanyadaan of the bride takes place. This ritual is handled by the maternal uncle of the bride (mamaji), wherein he takes her darling daughter to the mandap in a bamboo basket.

#8. Saptapadi
Now comes the phera time! Saptapadi is the time when the pheras around the holy fire takes place. This is done to finally solemnise the wedding. There are the significance and a promise attached to each phera that the couple has to abide by all throughout their lives.
