Amazing Large Aircraft Model: Virgin Atlantic RC Airplane

Model Works

Aircraft models make for a beautiful toy of any aviation enthusiast. The craftsmanship involved in doing it is very remarkable, as a simple, miniature model usually takes hundreds of hours to finish. In fact, it’s not just the aviation enthusiasts who will develop an appreciation for this masterpiece. It’s anyone - a child, a mother, a businessman, a salesman, a digital nomad, etc.

Just imagine if the model is bigger than you, and can even fly?

Now that’s amazing!

RC Airplanes

There are simple aircraft models, such as those specifically made to join a huge collection of items. There are also the RC airplanes, a shorter term for “radio-controlled” airplanes, which are small flying machines that can be controlled through a remote by an operator on the ground with a hand-held radio transmitter. The hand-held radio transmitter is used to communicate with a receiver (within the aircraft) to send signals to the servomechanisms that control the movement based on the position of joysticks on the transmitter.

RC airplanes are loved my many hobbyists, which went back from the 2000s. Of course, the models differ, in the same way, the weight, performance, style, and capabilities of motors, batteries, and electronics vary from model to model.

At present, hobbyists are not the only individuals owning RC airplanes. Many kids have their own toy-grade RC airplanes they use to play with their peers and family. Some scientific, government and military organizations also possess these RC airplanes for a more different purpose, such as experiments, gathering weather readings, aerodynamic tests, and modeling, spying, etc. Some are even armed and controlled by the military.

The biggest RC airplane ever

The Boeing 747-400 Virgin Atlantic Airliner is not just a large aircraft model, it is hailed as the world’s largest airplane. It is said that in the sky, it is nearly indistinguishable to a real airplane (it doesn’t fly the usual commercial jetliner vertical distance - 35,000 feet, after all!)

This Virgin Atlantic Airliner is 5.43m long, with a wingspan of 4.95m. It weights a total of 68 kg, and is powered by four IQ hammer 140 turbines, with a thrust of 14kg each.

The process of creating and finishing this huge 1:13 scale RC airplane took more than 2000 hours! Truly a lot of work. This plane can hold a cat or dog and give them a wonderful bird’s eye view of the world on the ground. And it sounds, looks, and flies just like a real airplane! It’s the real deal!

Here are the specs of this Virgin Atlantic RC Airplane:

Model: RC Boeing 747-400 from Adi Pitz
Wingspan: 4,95m
Length: 5,43m

Scale: 1/13
Turbine: 4x IQ Hammer 140
Pilot: Rainer Kamitz
Meeting: Airliner Meeting in Oppingen Germany July 2015

Drones may be the trend now, but it’s no doubt RC airplanes have been around much, much longer!

This RC plane was first showcased during the Airlinertreffen 2015 in Germany, and it really left a lot of people in awe of this awesome creation! The Airlinertreffen is an airplane meeting, which happens once every 2 years, and attracts crowds of visitors with the modelers’ true-to-original engine- and turbine-driven large models. This event showcases large aircraft models, and the Virgin Atlantic RC Airplane is the biggest out of the whole bunch!

The Airlinertreffen was first set up in 2011, and according to the co-organizer Adi Pitz, the model makers are a sworn community who knows each other. Therefore, being in MSV Langenau, and Giengen, it was not a problem to find audience and participants to show off their handmade flying artworks.

Surely, the modeler brought his love for aircrafts to the next level! The event encourages its participants to make large models on their own, meaning, no kits, but just construction plans as clues. If one was to present in this event, the love for aviation must really be strong!

The Virgin Atlantic RC Airplane was put to the test and took its maiden flight during that event, and performed several loops before returning to the ground.

Internet sensation

Since being posted and published on August 2015, the video “NEW BIGGEST RC AIRPLANE IN THE WORLD BOEING 747-400 VIRGIN ATLANTIC AIRLINER” by RC Media World has now over 18 million views, with 90 thousand likes.

The online audience were in disbelief, and amazement, just like the audience in the video. Some of the comments include:

Pure amazement

“In the air it looks like an real airplane.” Shu Kurenai

Poking fun at the airliner

“Very nice!  It seems to fly as smoothly as the real thing.  The only thing missing is little men losing your luggage!” Boise G

Adventurer spirit

“Who here actually wants to sit on that thing while its flying” Crater Kobraz

For the laughs

“The pilot who is flying the plane must be really small.” Карлос Магалхаес

Don’t you think seeing this RC plane fly in person is amazing?
