How to Choose the Best Storage Unit for Your Needs

Most of us keep all of our possessions in our homes. Often, we hold on to stuff we don’t need without really realizing we don’t need it.

This could become a real problem as some serious psychological disorders such as depression or high anxiety can be caused by holding on to meaningless objects.

On the other hand, those items don’t need to be so meaningless and can be materially or emotionally valuable. This is why you should consider moving them out of your house and into a storage unit.

The tricky part is, how to choose the right storage unit?

What should be in it?

Before you send off all things you don’t currently use to the storage, make sure you actually took the time to go through them and decided what should really be there. This is never the most popular step but it will do you good in the long run. Don’t create unnecessary piles. Everything you don’t need should be sold, donated or thrown away.

Why do you need it?

In order to decide on the best storage solution, make sure you determine the purpose firstly. For example, if you are moving to a different city, country or continent and need a place to stash as many things as possible, then you should jam as much as your storage will allow. On another hand, if you are looking for storage because it will temporarily keep your things to make your transit to a different house more comfortable, then make sure you leave some room to move around inside of it.

How big should it be?

This is a very important question. To determine how big should your storage unit be, you firstly need to measure the size of the items you will keep there. Carefully measure the boxes and don’t forget to add the additional space you will use to walk around and find the boxes you need. Also, add some extra room for ventilation. Sometimes, these units don’t have climate control and it is always a good idea to leave additional room for stuff to breathe.

Where should it be?

Don’t forget to take proximity to your house into account when choosing the unit. If you opt for the one that is a long drive away from your home, it will be significantly more difficult for you to reach it and use your belongings. Since the idea is to remove stuff from your home that you still need, this makes little sense. Therefore, make sure to choose a place that is close to your home.

Check it out?

Before making the final decision and find storage fast, be sure to go and take a look at the place in person. It is always advisable to check out multiple units and see which one would work the best. However, always demand to see the one you will actually be using before you sign the rental contract.

Lastly, no matter how safe the storage is, get insurance. You never know what can happen and you shouldn’t take that risk.
