Shantiniketan, historical retreat of a philosopher

Shantiniketan (meaning “abode of peace”) is one of the marvellous creations of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the great writer, artist, songwriter and educationalist. He was awarded the Nobel Literature laureate in the year 1913 and he was an important figure in Bengali Renaissance. In 1901, Tagore founded a school, and a university in 1921, popularly known as Visva-Bharati. This university became a centre for Bengali culture, focussing on art, humanities and contact with nature and revolutionary philosophy of breaking barriers between cultures, religions, castes, sexes, teachers and students, city and country, east and west.
