Microsoft Solitaire Enjoys 35 Million Monthly Players Even After 30 Years

Microsoft launched the computer game based on a card game, Solitaire, in 1990. As of now, the game has turned thirty years old today! To celebrate the same, Microsoft is attempting to make a world record by completing most of the Solitaire games in one day.

According to a report by Microsoft, even though the game has completed thirty good long years, it still has almost 35 million people playing this every month and more than 100 million people play it all across the world daily! Microsoft originally introduced Solitaire as a Windows 3.0 accessory. Specifically, it was designed to teach the people about the use of the cursor and computer mouse, and how it can be controlled when they grab the virtual digital cards and drop them at the right place. This grabbing and dropping help the users learn the basic features of drag and drop in the Windows operating system. To this day, the feature forms the core of the ease of usage of the Operating Systems today.

Given this popularity, it comes as no surprise that Microsoft Solitaire is one of the most-played games across the globe. Initially, the game was given the name Windows Solitaire, and the game was shipped in almost every Windows version for more than twenty years.

The company stopped shipping the game in Windows with the launch of the Windows 8 version in 2012. Initially, the game was programmed by Wes Cherry, who was an intern at Microsoft. The initial card deck was designed by Susan Kare, who was a pioneer of the Mac and pixel user interface. Initially, Cherry programmed the Solitaire game with a boss mode using a basic spreadsheet. It was designed to fool the coworkers and bosses. But, later, Cherry removed the boss mode’s feature from the Solitaire game as Microsoft told him to do so.

The game has a broader appeal to the people, and billions of people still play the game worldwide. Moreover, the game has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of the World Video Game previous year. Microsoft has also introduced innovation to make the game more appealing and extend its reach. The company introduced the game in more than 60 languages to localize it among the people. The game is played in more than 200 markets, which is quite an impressive figure in audience reach. The game got a significant and big update in the year 2012, which coincided with the removal of the game from the Windows 8 version.

The game was turned into a standalone app, and then it was introduced in the operating system. The new standalone game app has five new modes of games with competitive events and daily challenges. Moreover, it has been integrated for Xbox Live and can choose the more challenging levels. The game once again made its comeback in the Windows 10 version in 2015. Now, the users can find the humble game on every big and small platform!
