How to Use Metal Thickness Tester?

The latest ultrasonic thickness gauge uses the ultrasonic waves for determining the thickness of a material. It is a non-destructive investigation tool and equipment and no damages are caused when the electrical instrument or gauge is used to determine thickness. There is no requirement to access both sides of a metal surface, and hence the thickness can be measured easily and comfortably.

Technology involved

The gauge can measure the thickness of any substances, for instance, steel or PVC by measuring the time it takes for the sonic waves or ultrasound waves to pass through it. One important point to keep in mind here is that different kinds of materials and substances, including metals or PVCs, have different sonic strengths (because of their inherent molecular structure). For instance, the sonic velocity in mild steel is 5850 meters/sec while in PVC is 2400 meter/sec.

How to measure the thickness

The ultrasound thickness gauge is standard equipment used for measuring metal thickness in industries. It has the buttons/controls through which you can enter the sonic velocity of the substance, the thickness of which you are trying to measure. You will have to press the up and down button of the gauge so that the right sonic velocity is displayed on the display of the gauge. But how will you know what is the sonic velocity in the particular materials you are investigating? The gauge will come along with a manual in which the velocities of ultrasound waves in different kinds of materials, including stainless steel, iron, copper, etc. are specified.

Once you have entered the right sonic velocity, you will have to place the probe (connects with the gauge through a wire) on the surface of the material at the right or appropriate spot. You may also be required to apply a gel on the surface point where you will place the probe.  The sound will now travel from the transducer or the probe to the back end of the metal and will come back to its point of origin. The gauge display will provide you with the exact thickness of the metal item you are measuring in a few seconds or even less, depending on the thickness and type of material.

While earlier gauges only used a set frequency, they have adjustable frequency and hence can now deduce the thickness of a range of materials. They come with all details, accessories and instructions to help you measure comfortably and accurately.
