Looking back on my very first job after graduating from college, I remember feeling so excited and proud of myself for landing a full-time job. Yet, I went into it knowing that it wasn’t something that showcased my creativity, nor did it spark any interest for me other than paying my bills. I accepted the job because of my inability to know my worth, what I truly want, and what I deserved.

As the months went on, I came to a dark place mentally and was so stressed out that my job was causing me to panic regularly. I started to lash out at my parents and yell at my partner, not realizing they were trying to help. I was miserable and rude to other people, simply because I’d had another terrible day at work.

I believe it’s important to recognize when your job is causing you more stress than peace. The reason for feeling this way is different for everyone. Still, the one thing these individuals have in common is that they are depressed, miserable, and dread going into work every day.

Ask yourself if this is the type of life that you want to continue living? Are you in a job that is causing you to lash out at your partner? Are you always complaining but doing absolutely nothing about it? Are you having panic attacks at work?

You owe it to yourself to be doing something that not only makes you happy but also ignites your soul. It’s time to change directions and move forward in your life because you know you deserve it.

Some Signs You Need A New Job

You are mentally and physically exhausted.

You have lost passion for your job, which has resulted in reduced creativity.

You have developed daily headaches.

You always complain to your friends, family, and even coworkers.

You have panic attacks at work and home related to the job.

You dread going into work, and just the thought causes you to feel stressed and anxious.

Reflect On Your Job

Take a moment to analyze your job. Determine the exact issues that are causing you to feel stressed. It can be several things, but asking yourself the following questions will enable you to establish your next steps, and what to look for in your future role.

Is it your boss?

Is it a coworker?

Is it your commute?

Is it your company

Is it the position?

Is it the hours?

Is it the field?

Once you have figured out the underlying reason, write down what your ideal situation would look like and ensure to look for this moving forward. If it is a particular individual, have a professional talk with them. Or consider going to the HR manager to discuss the situation in further detail before making a final decision about your next steps.

Why People Tend To Stay In A Job For So Long That Causes Them Stress

  1. People tend to get comfortable, and would rather stay in the familiar territory then step outside their comfort zone and go after their dreams. As humans, we resist change and instead let fear take over our thoughts with all the things that could go wrong. Recognize that you are in control of your own life and you can do anything you set your mind to. You will not grow by continuing to stay in the same place, doing the same thing.
  2. For some, it’s a harsh reality when learning you have spent so much time and money on a career path that just isn’t meant for you anymore. Maybe you have spent the last six years as an interior designer, and you now realize this is not what you want to do. Understand that this is okay because, just like how your job has changed over the years, so have you. You have been brave enough to admit to yourself your job is no longer serving you, and you need a change. Accepting that you need more in your life is an incredible feeling. Celebrate it because it is saying you know yourself enough to walk away.
  3. The opinions of others are so authoritative that causes so many of us not to be our true self. Your happiness depends on you, and at the end of the day, it is your choice, and you are the final decision maker in how you want to live your life. Go after what you want, and don’t let the thought of someone judging or laughing at your matter. It’s easier said than done, but it is when you begin to accept this, that is when you can grow.

My challenge for you is next time you are feeling stressed about your job, take a moment, and go inward to understand what triggered the feeling? Please write it down and why it made you feel this way. Is this something that you have control over? Has this happened before?

Set goals for yourself and what you want to accomplish in the next week, months, and years.

What does happiness look like for you? What type of job would make you excited to get up in the morning?

Go after your dreams, apply for that new job, or start that business you have been talking about for years. You are in control of your happiness.
