Apple Watch 6 Blood Oxygen Monitor: How to Use It

The fact that the Apple Watch 6 can measure the blood oxygen levels (also referred to as SpO2) made it Apple’s 2020 flagship smartwatch. Given the coronavirus pandemic’s current circumstances, the Apple Watch 6 proved to be more useful as low blood oxygen levels indicate the infection of COVID-19. It’s safe to say that this feature in the Apple Watch has been introduced at just the right time. So, let’s see how you can use the Apple Watch 6 to measure your blood oxygen levels.

Facing Troubles Using Blood Oxygen Monitoring on Your Apple Watch?

While activation of the blood oxygen measurement feature is a part of the initial setup, there could be few other reasons why you cannot access it. For one, your iPhone might be running on a beta version of iOS. It could be a public beta or developer beta; either won’t allow you to see the blood oxygen monitoring option. So, to enjoy this latest feature, you will have to get rid of the beta program. How? You have two options, either restore your iPhone or wait to receive a consumer update.

The second reason for not being able to access the blood oxygen monitoring feature could be a family set up on your Apple Watch Series 6. This watch needs to be linked with the owner’s iPhone to keep the blood oxygen measurement active. So, make sure that the Apple Watch owner has his/her iPhone and iCloud account always connected to the Apple Watch Series 6.

How to Use the Blood Oxygen Monitoring Feature on the Apple Watch?

In case none of the above-mentioned conditions apply to you, let’s start using the amazing blood oxygen monitoring feature on your Apple Watch Series 6; given that you activated the feature on the Watch app during the initial set up. If yes, then start by pressing the Digital Crown that wakes up your apps screen. Now, find and tap on the icon that consists of red and blue lines creating a circle in the backdrop.

Once done, your Apple Watch will provide you with certain guidelines that need to be followed for the best results. Make it a point to follow all these guidelines with utmost accuracy, and then tap “Start.” A distinctive blue and red animation will show up on the screen with a 15 seconds countdown. Once the countdown is over, your Apple Watch will display your blood oxygen level in percentage.

In Which Situations, the Measurements Aren’t Accurate?

Apple has stated that blood oxygen measurements can be incorrect in some situations. For instance, exceptionally cold temperatures can affect the accuracy of measurements. Besides, a tattoo or a deep scar on the SpO2 sensor site also has an impact on the results. Additionally, if your heart rate is over 150bpm, forget about getting even a closely correct reading.

Also, as stated by the British Lung Foundation, blood oxygen measurement between 95-100% is considered healthy. Considering that the user might not have worn the watch accurately, the readings can still indicate something wrong with your health.
