How to Use Slit Lamp Imaging Module?

Slit lamps are the most important instrument needed by eye doctors and surgeons all over the world. It is used to inspect the inner portions of the eye that are invisible to the naked eye. The slit lamps are also used to conduct tonometry, measurements of tissues, and ophthalmic photography for future uses.

A slit lamp module has three parts:

  • The viewing arm
  • The illumination arm
  • Patient-positioning part

The viewing arm consists of magnifying eyepieces which are commonly called oculars. It also has a focusing ring that the doctor uses to change the refractive angle of the patient’s eyes. The doctor changes the refractive angles until the patient can see the images. There is also a small knob or lever that is used to change the magnification power of the lenses.

The illumination arm has the main light source that is used to shine a light on the eyes of the patient. The arm can be moved 180 degrees to suit the doctor’s needs. There is a separate knob that controls the length of the light and also can change the intensity and color of the light. The slit from which the light source is coming can also be changed. The modern slit lamp imaging module also has an attached digital camera to capture the interior images of the eye.

The patient-positioning part has two metal rods for the patient to position their forehead and chin. There is a forehead band that straps the patient’s head to the rod for getting accurate measurements.
