A design team can consist of one designer or a group of designers who play different roles, use different tools and methods to achieve a common goal. General goals can build websites, design cellular applications, or other design projects.
Type of design team structure
The design team structure refers to various designer hierarchies in the team and various roles and responsibilities they have. This is the organizational chart of the design team. There are four types of design team structures: centralized, embedded, flexible, and contractual.
Centralized design team structure
In this structure, the entire design team works together at the central location with one decision-maker. The large design team has several design managers who manage individual designers. This design manager then reported to one person of the Director of UX or Vice President UX.
Team 02.
The centralized design team works as an agent in the sense that they work on different design projects in the organization. The workload is managed by the design manager or the Director of UX.
The benefits of the centralized design team are:
- Easy collaboration and sharing feedback in the design team.
- Integrated design experience because the design team shares the vision and design of the same resource.
- Reducing internal team conflict because the role is clearly defined in the design team.
- Various types of learning opportunities for designers when they work on different design projects.
This design team has several losses that include:
- Insulation design team.
- A slower design process leads to waste time.
Embedded Design Team Structure
Here, designers are embedded in several cross-functional teams in an organization and they report to team leaders. Designers can work with developers, product engineers, and marketers on certain products, features, or business lines.
Team 03.
They are also known as decentralized or distributed teams and they have the following advantages:
- Increase cross-departmental trust and collaboration.
- Increase product development speed.
- Provide designers with the opportunity to become experts on certain types of projects.
The team's structure comes with several disadvantages that include:
- Designers can be outnumbered in teams that might lead to their ignored opinions.
- If there is no centralized design system, the distributed team can do a lot of recurrent work that spends time and resources.
- There may be a slight increase in the design process if no one is in charge of increasing it.
Flexible Design Team Structure
In a flexible design team structure, designers are part of the cross function team and report to team leaders and they also report to the central design leader. The in-house design team structure is a hybrid of the centralized and embedded design team structure. This design team is flexible because it can be moved easily to meet changes in organizational design needs.
