Leadership in New Light.

When someone utters the word ‘leader’ we often first think of the Prime Minister of the country, CEO, manager, or team leader. Some might extend a thought to the man or woman of the house who takes care of the needs of families, support them during the troubles and give them the freedom to thrive with a choice of making decisions and owning mistakes.

In short, you don’t always need a title to be a leader. A leader is someone who “lifts a person's vision to high sights raises a person's performance to a higher standard builds a personality beyond its normal limitations,” as Austrian management consultant Peter Drucker says.

Whether it is leading a family, an organization or a country every leader has to face a crisis such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that tastes their leadership prowess. And during such tough times when your family, team, or citizens of the entire nation is facing the fear of the unknown a leader is the only hope who, as American author John Maxwell says, “knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

However, with every COVID wave, the current global pandemic is bringing thousands of problems known and unknown, seen and unseen. These dark circumstances require unlearning and relearn leadership in a new light. And along with embracing the ‘new normal’ of the post-COVID era, leaders also have to inculcate these new leadership traits to lead during the crisis of COVID-19.

#1 Candor

Candor especially during this time means honesty without ambiguity. People respond much better to the known even to the bad news. The unknown or half-known situations further fuel anxiety or misleading information does worse damage of losing trust long-term.

Confiding in your team and shedding a complete light on a situation, the good and the bad, give a concise idea of the circumstances to your team, which helps them get ready for the worse, and toughen up to find a way forward together as a team.

#2 Communication

Communications held by the leaders during the crisis must be factual, consistent, and reliable. Holding regular conversations explaining and discussing current scenarios whether it's related to business growth, strategies, employee productivity or government policies will help your team stay updated during tough times and ready to embrace or drive the change that needs to better the situation.

Then again, adding facts, stats, and discussion with subject experts will clear their doubts also enhancing their trust over you as their leader showing your robust efforts to find the right and practical solutions during the crisis keeping in mind the future business as well employees.

#3 Open to change

When the country began to shut down due to coronavirus in March 2021, it was a never-seen-before moment for everyone including the leaders. This time of uncertainty required leaders to avoid the temptation of ‘sticking to the plan’ and quickly adapt the flexible and practical approach in order to help the business and team survive. Furthermore, the rigidity of sticking to former policies or delay in changing the course means drastic consequences for the health of a business as well as staff.

The ongoing crisis demands continuity of this openness to change from leaders with regular actions of reviewing data, information, and feedback and encourages a change of action whenever necessary.

And most leaders at home, companies, and parliaments have inculcated these traits at the right time that have helped them to make the right decisions. And the results are surviving companies and thriving organizations post-pandemic-era.

The latest edition of Insights Success Pragmatic Personalities - 2021” features such leaders who with these traits have been leading teams and driving businesses to only survive during the crisis but move forward with more strength, diligence, and opportunities to thrive.
