Massage Therapy As a Complementary Health Practice

In alternative medical practice, bodywork is any non-surgical therapeutic or preventive method which involves working on the body in some form affecting breathing, touch, or movement. This can involve the use of massage, energy work, deep tissue work, nutritional work, physical therapy or pranayam as well. It may also be a form of dance such as Reiki. Bodywork is an ancient art of the Indian and Chinese cultures, which has now been adopted and incorporated into western medicine. Many techniques of bodywork have become highly successful in treating and preventing illness, pain and emotional trauma. There are some specific forms of bodywork that are more popular than others.

One form of bodywork that has become very popular over recent years is manual therapy and bodywork. Manual therapy can include acupuncture, Reiki, reflexology, and Swedish massage. These therapies not only promote relaxation, they also encourage healing within the body. For instance, massage can help to reduce inflammation and reduce the effects of stiffness.

Another popular bodywork is deep tissue massage. This therapy is achieved by gentle stretching and manipulating the muscles and is usually done with a massage therapist. This type of bodywork can help to reduce tension in the muscles and increase range of movement. In addition it can also reduce soreness and increase circulation. Many people who get a deep tissue massage find that it improves their range of motion and reduces muscle spasms.

Bodywork can also involve deep-tissue massage, which is used to stimulate the deep layers of the skin. The goal of this form of bodywork is to remove energetic debris, blockages and toxins from the skin. It can promote detoxification, improve the flow of vital life force and restore optimal health. When a person has a bodywork therapy, it is not unusual for the therapist to take the client to the pineal gland and take a look at the crystal formations there. They hope to determine where a blockage may be causing the problem.

Another type of bodywork involves the use of yoga techniques to address physical, emotional and mental aspects of the human body. In fact, many forms of bodywork are based on yoga or similar philosophies. A good example is therapeutic touch, which was introduced by Hatha Yoga. Therapeutic touch is based on the idea that there is an energetic connection between the body, mind and spirit. In this therapy, the therapist will apply pressure to specific points on the patient's body using yoga postures.

Bodywork may also involve therapeutic manipulation of the soft tissues, muscles and joints. This helps to decompress the muscles, decrease muscle tension and improve range of motion. Many massage therapists incorporate these types of bodywork therapies into their overall treatment approach. Massage therapists who practice the discipline of reflexology use techniques such as the Needle Exercise to help patients restore balance to their body's energy flow.

Massage therapists who also practice bodywork may combine Massage therapy  with stretching exercises to promote relaxation and mobility. A great combination! Many massage therapy programs also incorporate Pilates into their program in order to promote flexibility and balance. These exercises are designed to strengthen muscles and improve the body's range of motion. In addition, they encourage deep relaxation through controlled breathing and rhythmic imagery.

As you can see from the list above, there are many therapeutic uses for the practice of bodywork therapy. These modalities are excellent for chronic pain management and can even promote relaxation. This makes them very attractive alternative therapies for many people.
