Don't ignore the effects of digital eye strain.

Guess how much time Singaporeans spend staring at digital devices in a day. The result may surprise you because it takes an average of 12 hours and 42 minutes!

 

Despite all of technology's delights, our relationship with our handy gadgets is not always healthy or advantageous. That's because when we spend so much time in front of a screen, our eyes are bombarded with a lot of input.

 

Digital Eye Strain is a condition that can occur as a result of this. Blurred vision, eye discomfort or dryness, and excessive tears are some of the symptoms. These discomforts might hinder productivity and possibly raise the risks of making mistakes in the workplace or at school.

In this day and age, avoiding screen time is impractical. There are, however, techniques to look after your eyes. Here are some recommendations to help you avoid putting too much strain on your eyes, whether you're working in front of the computer or watching your favorite TV show:

Remember to blink!

Blinking is a reflex that replenishes the natural tear covering in the eyes and keeps them from drying out. On average, weblink 12 times per minute. When we're staring at a screen, though, we only blink five times every minute. Attempt to blink more frequently or use eye drops to instantly moisten your eyes.

Allow your eyes to rest.

Simply follow the 20-20-20 rule when it comes to resting your eyes. First, take a 20-minute break from your computer screen. Then concentrate on an object that is 20 meters distant from you. Finally, keep this look for 20 seconds. This simple practice relaxes the eye muscles and provides much-needed relaxation to your eyes.

Reduce the glare.

Sunlight or bright indoor lighting can generate glare, which can be quite distracting. To avoid blinding your eyes, shift your position, move your desk, or apply an anti-glare filter to your screen. If you're sitting near a window, it's great if you have curtains and shades so you can control how much light comes in.

Make the necessary adjustments to your display.

Always strive to adapt the brightness of your screen to the brightness of your surroundings. Squinting occurs when the eyes struggle to take in visual information from a too bright or too dark screen.

 

To see if your screen brightness is enough, perform the following simple test: If a white background appears to be a light source, your screen is likely too bright. On the other hand, if the white background looks greyish, you may wish to increase the brightness a few notches.
