Can a phone call save a life?

A telephone is one of those devices which, gaining new shapes and functionalities over time, has become one of the most common devices on the globe. Nowadays no one can imagine life without a telephone and the possibilities offered by this small yet clever device.

Being in constant contact with loved ones, friends, family and acquaintances is something that people before the 19th century could only dream of. Nowadays, everyone has at least one landline and one mobile phone at home - as many phones as there are possibilities to contact the world. Not many of us realize, however, that currently existing mobile phones and landline phones - designed for home use, in addition to their standard functionality - communicating with the outside world, can also provide invaluable assistance in emergency situations, by no means due to the possibility of dialing the emergency number from the keypad, but thanks to the system of quickly calling for help with a specially dedicated emergency button.

Modern cordless and corded telephones have specially programmed speed dialling buttons. Under each such button we can save any phone number e.g. fire brigade, ambulance service or someone close, or even put a photo of e.g. someone from the family for better identification. In case of an emergency, fainting, feeling unwell or any other event, all you have to do is press one button and the phone will call a predefined number. The benefit of such a solution is obvious - in case of an accident, when we are weakened or stressed out by an unforeseen situation, we do not have to remember the number to our family, emergency service or family doctor - the most important thing at that moment is to call for help. One-button direct dialling is an effective solution for the elderly, people living alone far from their families or disabled people with limited mobility of limbs or mobility.

Designers and manufacturers have gone a step further, however, by offering users mobile phones with emergency response systems, equipped with the so-called SOS security button - a special key under which we can program any phone number - in case of an emergency, when we want to call for help, we just need to press the characteristic button usually located at the back of the casing, and the phone will call the predefined number.

So can a phone save a life? We can certainly say that a modern telephone equipped with extended functionality can become our guardian angel in a life threatening situation, make it easier to call for help and as a result maybe save our life when speed and efficiency of reaction counts.
