In fact, most states require that a family lawyer at least have a bachelor's degree in law before being allowed to practice law. After passing the bar examination, family lawyers must complete a state board certification that guarantees him or her competence in the field. Once board certification is obtained, family lawyers can legally practice law in a particular state. To become board certified, family lawyers need to pass three different sets of state bar examinations.
