Why OSHA Stresses on the Importance of Protective Equipment?

Many of the rules that are implemented by OSHA make it necessary for employees to wear all sorts of protective clothing when working in a hazardous environment.

For instance, a worker that works in an environment where there is a potential of getting hit by a heavy object, should wear a helmet or any appropriate head gear.

Many times, the employers do enforce such laws, but the workers themselves tend to shirk their responsibilities and avoid wearing protective clothing.

Many of the employees claim that protective equipment causes a lot of discomfort, thus impeding the progress of their work. But as an employer, it is your duty to make sure they wear their protective clothing.

A common excuse presented by most workers is that the work gear is either too heavy or it is very hot and uncomfortable in it.

Fortunately, with technology working miracles everyday, new designs and materials have been developed to erase these problems. Helmets and hard hats are no longer made from heavy metal, but are made from strong plastic materials instead.

Safety boots and no longer hot and heavy but are cool and comfortable for the workers, and they no longer have to complain about sweaty feet anymore!

What's more, safety clothing should also be provided to the workers, when they are required to work outdoors.

During extremely cold climactic conditions, workers should be given warm company jackets to protect from hypothermia. When workers have to work in the rains, they should be given Goretex jackets to allow them to work without getting wet.

Highway construction workers should be given water proof as well as reflective clothing.

Employers must note that it is their responsibility to ensure that workers are wearing work gear at all times, and are complying with the law.

If the employees are found to be violating any one of the OSHA rules and regulations, the employers will be held responsible and fined.

In the case of an injury or a fatality, the company will be subjected to a lawsuit. Even if the workers are supposed to bring their own work gear, it is the employers duty to check if the gear is appropriate or not.

Another example is that workers are required to wear gloves to protect their forearms and hands when handling dangerous materials or chemicals. Gloves can also be worn if the job involves dealing with electric wires.

For those workers who are constantly on their knees, then knee pads should be provided.

Always make sure that your workers are wearing the right kind of equipment and that it fits them well. In being irresponsible, not only will it result in injuries and loss of life, but the employer could be held responsible and taken to court.
