Ammonia is a widely utilised industrial chemical that is primarily employed in agriculture as well as to remove iron from steel wool, petroleum, rubber, and other sulfide-rich products. It's also found in water and human bodies, and it's an important part of many biological processes. Ammonia is also necessary for a variety of biological activities and serves as a prebiotic precursor for the creation of nucleic acids and amino acids. Ammonia molecules, which are primarily colourless gas, do not diffuse easily into the environment and can stay suspended in the atmosphere for years before being dispersed by wind. Ammonia is frequently generated as a byproduct of other chemical reactions in an environment where it is used because of its high nitrogen content. For example, when urea in organic matter combines with oxygen in an aquifer, ammonia is produced.The natural oxidation reactions that produce ammonia give it its distinctive green hue, which is why it is usually found in wet or muddy soils; it also produces the unmistakable ammonia smell. The conversion of nitrogen compounds into nitrogen, such as nitrogenous waste and nitrogenous ammonia generated by aerobic bacteria, is another frequent source of ammonia.

It is usually nitrites or nitrates that cause ammonia to be detected in the soil or in a river or stream. Nitrites are chemical molecules with a nitrogen atom that act as photosynthesis precursors in green plants. Nitrates are formed in water by the reaction of nitrite with hydrogen peroxide (a common constituent in most chlorine filters) or the separation of ammonia from nitrate salts made during rain. Ammonia is released into the atmosphere through organic matter and taken up by living organisms when nitrite or nitrate levels are too high.

Ammonia has a variety of industrial uses. Ammonia is frequently employed as a manufacturing additive in the production of plastic, cement, paints, varnish, rubber, and other man-made materials. It can also be used as a stabiliser in polyurethane foam production and as a fixer for rubber curing problems. Ammonia tends to form a colourless gas when stored undiluted, though the consistency may fluctuate depending on the temperature. Ammonia can also create ozone, which can irritate the respiratory system. When ammonia in a lab fails to turn a colour after being exposed to UV light, it is referred to be "ammonium oxide," and should be removed from the lab as soon as possible.
