How do you prepare yourself for playing a magic user in D&D 5E? Some spells are more powerful than others, some can be made by using a specific material and other spells can be learned from trainers or purchased from the PHB. In this article I am going to run through what is needed to make a successful spell caster in D&D. First we start with a brief discussion of spell modifiers.

Spell save DC 5e = 8 + proficiency bonus + Intelligence Modifier. Spell Attack Modifier = your proficency bonus + Intelligence Modifier. Under the Spellcasting Ability heading, Page 116 of the Player Handbook refers to the individual classes and their listed spell Save DC and Spell Attack Modifiers. Next we have the standard saving throw to overcome spell resistance and an example of a proficiencies used in Spell save DC.

Intelligence is your primary intelligence category

Each ability uses one of your three primary intelligence categories (Int, Wis, and Dex). Your proficiencies are in the same three stats as well, but each of them only has a single spell save DC in place for each level of spell that you can cast. The only exception to this is that while all three stats are used in the same manner for saving throws and attack rolls, each class uses their spell Save DC in a different way. Thieves use their dexterity instead of their intelligence, Rogues use their constitution instead of their intelligence, and Clerics use their intelligence instead of their charisma.

Your proficiencies provide you with two options for spell save DC:

The normal DC of an enchantment and the highmagic DC of an illusion spell. If you take a proficiency in illusion spells, then the normal magic saves will work for your enchantments. If you take a proficiency in enchantment spells, then the highmagic saves will work for your illusions. You may find that you are unable to enchant certain items, or that certain objects do not align to your alignment. If this happens, then your saving throw to resist that type of spellcast will not work.

Some of your classic magic systems like charm save dc and shape save dc will work perfectly for both your normal and high magic spells. Shape spells are difficult to resist and work well for enchantment and illusion spells.

Charm save Dc Spells Are Simple to Defeat

If You Are Familiar with The Game and can cast a high magic charm against your target. The only problem with charm save dc and shape save DC spells is that they don't get as much use as the higher level spells.

When you reach third level, you will gain access to three new slots. Three slots where you can increase your spell save DC and caster level by one. This allows you to cast these spells at a much more intense level, but you must know how to cast them properly. Your ability score is also affected by your charisma

Intelligence and constitution scores. Each one of these scores affects your ability to cast spells of a lower level. Your charisma, in particular, improves dramatically at each level beyond third. The increase in your charisma also increases your likelihood of successfully using higher level magic items.

Intelligence, on the other hand, affects how well you can handle magic. At higher levels, you gain access to both your mind mastery and your concentration proficiencies. Concentration allows you to cast spells when you are focused and in an area that you are familiar with. Your mind mastery allows you to increase your spell save DC and your concentration ability score.
