Did You Know These Engaging Photography Tips for Incredible Photos?

Are you a budding engagement photographer? Read on to know how to excel in your profession. In addition to offering photographers the chance to capture incredible couple portraits, engagement photography sessions have a number of other advantages. Photographers who specialize in engagement sessions often photograph the couple's wedding as well, making engagement sessions an integral part of their workflow. Thus, engagement sessions give photographers a chance to get to know the couple and work with them without being pressured by wedding timelines. Furthermore, photographers can use these sessions to learn new techniques for creating portfolios and award-winning images. There is, of course, more at stake if the couple doesn't like the photos than in a typical shoot. Take advantage of the opportunities provided. We've compiled some engagement photography ideas and tips to help you get the most out of each session.

PLAN AHEAD

For any shoot, there are a lot of preparations to make in advance. Here are some elements to consider when planning an engagement shoot with your clients.

Location: Clients often ask you to choose or suggest a location for the shoot. If you are a local photographer, then you probably know some great spots. It's worth looking online for new places to suggest as well. Try searching for "Best Engagement Photography Locations" and your city name on Google. Check for permit requirements as well. During your shoot, you don't want to be kicked out of the location.

Time of Day: Most outdoor sessions happen during golden hour, but location, weather, and other factors can also come into play. Your client may not be interested in the bright and airy look often associated with golden hour.

How Long to Shoot: You will need more time if your client visits more locations or changes their wardrobe during the shoot. In my experience, three hours is sufficient for two locations (no more than 30 minutes apart) and a couple of wardrobe changes. While this will vary from shoot to shoot, it's worth considering avoiding going into a shoot with no end in sight.

Clothing: If you're not familiar with color theory, I recommend learning more. Couples may ask for advice on what to wear, and knowing what colors go together helps. Couples (and you) should also dress comfortably. I always recommend that my clients bring a jacket, especially if the shoot runs past sunset.
