Why Is Dupuytren's Contracture Is Known as Viking Hands

Dupuytren's is a fibrosing ailment distressing the palmar fascia and causes our fingers to bend, possibly ultimately getting fixed in that position. We thank the Vikings who joined their genome into the European community. Blue eyes, in addition to the unfortunate Dupuytren's disease, are common Nordic traits.

The condition causes one or more fingers to bend towards the palm and remain in a bent position. Dupuytren's contracture or Viking hand is common, but a lot of people never heard of this medical condition affecting the hand.

Viking's disease causes thickening of the tissue layer that lies under the skin's surface on the palm side of your hand and fingers. This thickening and tightening of tissue pull the fingers towards the palm, causing your fingers to bend in the flexed position. Mostly the ring and the little fingers are affected, but the condition can also affect any fingers.

Dupuytren's contracture or Viking hand is not painful, but it makes it very difficult to do everyday tasks, including holding large objects or putting your hands in pockets.

Sometimes called Dupuytren's disease, the aliment is genetic, meaning it runs in families. So, for example, if one of your parents has Viking's disease, there is a genetic risk that you may also develop the hand problem.

Today, Dupuytren's contracture or Viking hand commonly affects people of Northern European inheritance whose ancestors were Dutch, English, Irish, Scottish, or French. However, it also affects people of Scandinavian ancestry whose families came from Sweden, Norway, or Finland.
