Forklift Safety In Wet Conditions

Forklifts are an integral part of any warehouse or distribution centre. They handle heavy loads efficiently by utilizing the mechanical advantage afforded them by their long forks. However, operating these machines can be dangerous if they are not handled properly. This is especially true when adverse conditions such as rain make visibility difficult for drivers.

Forklift drivers who are employed to move loads outside will inevitable have to deal with inclement weather. In order to maintain worker productivity while ensuring workplace safety, forklift operators should be fully trained to competently operate their equipment safely in wet conditions. The following is a list of general safety precautions that workers need to know when using a forklift in wet conditions.

The Importance Of Forklift Safety In Wet Conditions

Adhering to forklift safety tips for winter weather is critical to the success of your business. Not only is wet and slippery weather tough on equipment, but it can be incredibly difficult and dangerous to operate in.  Forklift safety should be paramount in any workplace where forklifts are in use.

Forklift operation is complex even in the most ideal conditions. As such, a forklift operator should be fully trained and proficient in all aspects of forklift operations before they use a machine in wet conditions.  This training goes beyond teaching workers to utilise the foot pedals and steer with their hands; it includes all safety precautions, laws, and regulations for using a forklift as well as promotes the necessary safety beliefs and culture.

Forklift Operation in the Rain

When it is raining outside, forklift operators need to exercise extra caution when operating their equipment. Due to reduced visibility caused by rain,  objects and drivers can be difficult to see. This makes it much more probable that an accident will occur when using a forklift in wet conditions.

When visibility is poor, workers should not exceed their normal speeds and should ensure that they have complete control over the vehicle at all times. Instead of speeding up or overtaking other forklifts, workers should slow down and maintain a larger distance from workers ahead of them.

Forklift operators are required to wear the appropriate safety gear regardless of weather, however, wet conditions require special consideration.  Workers should ensure that their workwear which is preferably made from materials such as cotton and wool as synthetic clothing cannot absorb water and can make it difficult for forklifts to drive as they can become slippery. In order to maintain a sturdy foothold, forklift operators should wear boots with thick soles.

Due to the increased amount of water on the ground, forklifts should also be equipped with chains and other traction devices to prevent slipping.
