Hair Loss In Cats: Is It Normal Shedding Or Alopecia?

If you own a cat, you can tell the difference between feline alopecia and normal shedding if the loss of hair is in specific spots or the fur is just notably thin.

One big difference between alopecia and normal shedding is that normal shedding does not display appreciable loss of hair on cats. While you might see hairballs and fur tufts around your home, your cat will appear to have normal fur as far as its density, thickness, and length.

Cat alopecia could be caused by lots of things, like ringworm, infections like dermatophytosis, or parasites like mites or fleas.

It could also be triggered by underlying allergies to environmental factors, fleas, and food ingredients. Genetics might also be an alopecia “cause,” that is, in certain cat breeds like the Sphynx. Finally, some normal variations in cat breeds can appear to have alopecia. For instance, elderly Siamese cats can lose hair on their ear flaps, and almost any cat breed could develop sparse fur around their preauricular region, that is, fronting the ears, on top of their head.

Any skin and/or hair coat issue exhibited by your pet should warrant an appointment with your animal hospital Westminster, MD
