Safety Tips For Pets During The Holidays

If you own pets and would like to dress up your holiday decorations with something floral, be careful which plants you pick. Pine needles, amaryllis bulbs, European mistletoe, and lilies could all cause critical health problems if your pets eat them.

Generally, these plans could trigger oral irritation. They could also cause a pet to drool and salivate. Too much drool can trigger gastrointestinal upsets. It is, however, not true that poinsettia plants are harmful to pets.

Various other decorations used during the holidays that you as a pet owner should not use include liquid potpourri (quite toxic to pet cats) and candles, which could burn your pet or cause fires if knocked down. If your pet has a tendency to climb up things, think about having your Christmas tree anchored to your ceiling or wall so that it will not fall over and have your sharp ornaments broken all over.

When you open gifts, remember that batteries can be quite toxic to pets, so keep them away from their reach. Any decorations that have string (tinsel or ribbons) components might also become an obstruction should your pet happen to ingest these.
