Laying waxed concrete on the floor

In recent years, waxed concrete has gained a good reputation as a floor covering. It is no longer only found in industrial buildings but has been recommended by a modern floor service provider over here. With its contemporary look, waxed concrete flooring is now an aesthetic and durable solution to realize all decorative desires. Discover also the advantages and disadvantages of waxed concrete as flooring.

Different aspects of waxed concrete

A distinction is made between different types of waxed concrete, which allow for a variety of different finishes and colors, such as:

  • Washed concrete or deactivated concrete, where pebbles or pebbles are visible. They are mainly used outdoors, especially for terraces.
  • Printed concrete or stenciled concrete, where special stencils are used to create patterns that leave an imprint in the screed.
  • Concrete that looks like printed concrete can look like paving stones, quarry stones, or bricks.
  • Smooth concrete with a glossy appearance is very popular in interiors because of its uniform appearance in a variety of colors.

A simple but rigorous technique

Concrete wax is applied to a concrete slab or an existing floor covering such as tiles or wooden floors. It needs a hard, sound surface with no holes or cracks and must not be laid on a soft floor or clay floor.

Before you start, you need to make formwork to get clean edges, into which you pour a through-colored compound (mixture of water and product) that hardens by crystallization drying. The layer should not exceed 5 mm, except for exterior areas (8 mm). 72 hours after drying, the layer is lightly sanded with a smoothing trowel or a polishing machine, depending on the size of the surface.

The second step is then to wet the floor well and then smooth it again before applying a liquid gel wax with a roller or electric floor polisher. After a drying time of about 10 hours and polishing with a soft cloth or polishing machine, the floor covering is optimally waterproof.

While it is advisable to hire a professional to do the installation, even an experienced, methodical and thorough do-it-yourself can easily complete the process by following the instructions provided in the preparation kits.

Flooring with many advantages

Waxed concrete is a composite concrete material that has been treated to repel water and is suitable for both outdoor and indoor flooring. On a patio, it offers excellent resistance to wear and climatic changes and is perfect for cleaning with a pressure washer.

It adapts to all styles. With a color tone that harmonizes with the walls, it modernizes and personalizes an interior and suits any setting, whether exotic, modern, or more classic. It goes perfectly with furniture made of wood or rattan, wrought iron, or designer furniture and gives a real unity to any room. Time remains waxed concrete's most important ally, giving it a patina, not unlike the look of paving stones or real stone.

Your tiles are faded and you don't dare to rip it all out and build a shell? Wax concrete on tiles or old floors is a great alternative to renovate an old floor and give your home a new look. All you need to do is apply a bonding agent that allows the wax concrete to adhere directly to the tiles or other floor types. The wax concrete is then applied in two coats.
