Most Notorious Hacking Attacks on News Media:

2013 is rapidly becoming an attack year for hackers’ major news media outlets as well as social media sites becoming hack visits that are a target. While some hackers attack websites of the government to discredit these sites, others targeted social media sites and the largest news media in the world. Alongside the websites and the companies, those who use these portals were also affected, and were afflicted with discomfort to a certain extent. The most popular hacks in the media industry include: webroot.com/safe

Fox News: Earlier on July 4 2011 there was a message that stated the murder of President Barack Obama on the Twitter account of the Fox News media site. When the news was widely reported as an error in the statement, a secret agency was designated to investigate the matter. The secret service discovered that the controversy was orchestrated by a group known as the Script Kiddies. One of the Script Kiddies' members told Stony Brook University's Think magazine that they targeted Fox News as "their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting".

NBC hackers took over NBC.com in February 2013, when they loaded the site by using Citadel Trojan malware which were being automatically transferred to users' systems. The site was put under danger due to the drive-by downloading malware attack on the NBC.com website. The website was also temporarily blocked by Google.

AP Another notorious hacking attack was carried out by hackers the Twitter accounts of Associated Press in April of 2013. They caused an online panic after posting a fake tweet that said "Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured." Although the claim turned out to be false, it caused AP the sum of $130 million reduction before the White House announced and denied the allegations. It was the first major media hack to be hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA). It has also previously attacked other major media websites, such as BBC, Reuters, NPR and many others. The AP attack was carried out by sending phishing email to AP reporters, containing fake links designed to trick reporters to click the hyperlinks.

Another significant hack in the media occurred with the attack against The New York Times, made by SEA in August of 2013. The attack occurred within two weeks of the attack on the Washington Post's website, making it the two most significant hacks in the history of media. SEA issued a tweet saying "Hi @Twitter, look at your domain, it’s owned by #SEA :)" This impeded many users from being able to access their account as well as the images. The Twitter hack lasted about 90 minutes, whereas the NYT hack took several hours.
